The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Problem transferring ad roles

Asked by grblades in SBS Small Business Server, Active Directory

Tags: sbs2003r2, active directory, migration

First a quick summary what I have done so far :-

Server A is a 2003 R2 standalone server running a copy of virtual server
NT4 was installed as a BDC and then the network connection broken and made to a PDC.
NT4 was upgraded to 2003 enterprise using an evaluation license and media.

I then installed SBS 2003R2 and used the microsoft guide on how to install sbs into an existing domain.
Changing the global catalogue worked find and after the sync was complete (verified event log) I disabled it on the eval server and rebooted.
I then changed over all the roles and updated the dns settings so the dns on the new server was being used and left the server for an hour before rebooting.
Upon rebooting it took ages to start and didnt work properly so I changed the dns back to using the eval server and it is working again but I am getting errors in the event log.

I tried to continue the sbs installation but it is complaining that it does not have the roles assigned.
If I run the admin tools and connect to the sbs server it is showing that it has all the roles assigned to it.
If I connect to the eval server it is saying that there is an error and the main server doesnt have the roles assigned to it.
When I first start the admin tools on the sbs server it connects to the eval server.

At this point I am stuck.

I am guessing that the roles have been transferred correctly but there is a setting somewhere saying that the eval server is the one which should have the roles. I am guessing this is held within the DNS?

Can someone help me diagnose and fix this issue.

Once it is fixed I will offline the eval server and move the standalone server into the domain or just reinstall it whichever is easiest.
