The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How to preserve file metadata when migrating sbs 2003 from old cpu to new cpu

Asked by rberke in SBS Small Business Server, Computer Servers

Tags: metadata sbs migrating owner date created

Our old SBS 2003 server has some software and hardware problems, so we are buying new hardware and reinstalling SBS 2003 from scratch. Our domain name and IP address will stay the same.

After new machine has been configured, I will manually create mydomain\Administrator and about 10 other users whose names are identical to the old server.

Does anybody know a simple way to preserve file ownership & dates  create/modify/access when migrating my data files to the new server?

Of course, the simplest answer is "Don't bother to preserve these attributes".
Instead create a report of ownership with batch command: dir *.* /s /q >  myreport.txt

But, I hope to somehow retrieve the metadata by using ntbackup to offload all the old server files then restore them on the new server.

Exchange emails do NOT need to be migrated.

The only important metadata is file ownership, dates created/modified/accessed. I don't care if other security settings and metadata (like author, title, etc) are migrated.

I'm 99% sure that ntBackup will handle the dates created/modified/accessed automatically.

But, I don't think ntbackup will restore the file owner because the new server is not going to have the same UID's for the users.

I found at least one in depth discussion ( at http://thebackroomtech.com/2007/08/28/howto-migrate-file-shares-permissions-and-user-profiles-paths-in-a-windows-2003-domain/ )

But, thebackroomtech discussed so many solutions that it is not clear which one to use.  At the moment, it appears that http://www.SBSmigration.com might be my next step. But that still looks more complicated than my needs.
