Windows Small Business Server 2003 FAQ for more Infos: http://www.microsoft.com/w
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI took over a MS SBS2003 server that was configured as a domain controller. It was moved to another location. No it is only needed for a simple file server to run a simple database program. I have reconfigured it by removing AD, all of the old users, etc.
Now when we start it, it will run for about an hour or so & then shutdown. I checked the Event Viewer & under System it had the following event:
Source: SBCore
Type: Error
EventID: 1014
"This computer must be configured as a domain controller. It will be shut down in 30 minutes. To prevent this computer from shutting down, run Setup on the disk that you used to install the operating system to configure the computer as a domain controller."
Also the following:
This computer must be configured as a domain controller. It will be shut down in 60 minutes. To prevent this computer from shutting down, run Setup on the disk that you used to install the operating system to configure the computer as a domain controller.
They only want a file server & that's all. Is there anyway to reset this server to NOT require it to be a domain controller? Or will I HAVE to reinstall the AD & make it a domain controller, but not use it as a full blown server?
Thanks in advance for your help!!

Officially, SBS must be a domain controller. There is a process that checks to determine if DC services are still running, if not, then you receive the message you noted. I've always just completely rebuilt any SBS servers that I wanted demoted. I've heard there are ways of getting around the shutdown, though none were worth my time. Easier to just rebuild the box.
DCPromoing a SBS will result in the same shutdown timer. That's how I first ran in to it. I DCPromoed a 2003 SBS. Had no issues running DCPromo. No errors. No warnings. Nothing. But soon afterwards that shutdown timer appeared. We fought it for a while and then resigned to formatting the box and reinstalling.
