Question

Using Group Policy to roll out Junk Mail lists for Outlook 2007?

Asked by: DReade83

I have the Outlook 2007 GP installed on our DC. There's an option to:

"Specify path to Safe Senders list"

However when I add a path, a UNC location to a share on the DC accessible by everyone, and do a GPUPDATE /FORCE on each client and restart Outlook, nothing has been added to the safe senders list in Outlook Junk Mail filter.

The same can be found when trying to add a Safe Recipient or Blocked Sender list.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks in advance.

Did you follow the instructions here on Technet?

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179183.aspx

Did you create a New Policy or modify one of the existing ones?

by: DReade83Posted on 2009-07-23 at 10:37:15ID: 24927840

They're the exact ones I used to download the ADM file. I used a new policy. I have managed to apply Junk Mail settings, i.e. disable it completely, no problem. It's just the settings I need the most don't work, i.e. the recipient/domain lists.

Any ideas?

did you do a gpupdate /force on the server as well?   To be honest I've not worked with that particular GP.   Does the Group Everyone have Share and Security permissions?

by: DReade83Posted on 2009-07-23 at 10:51:31ID: 24928013

Yeah I did a GPUPDATE /FORCE. The only security settings applied to the GP are the standard ones that are applied to every other GP, which as far as I know is the "Authenticated Users" group.

sorry I wasn't more clear...I mean't on the server share itsself  \\server\share where you placed the list.

by: DReade83Posted on 2009-07-23 at 11:06:58ID: 24928190

Ah sorry, well I've only tried this on my machine for now, and I'm a domain admin. The share itself though is read only to all, whereas I've got full access.

Perhaps the issue lies in how the list was created?

see the information in this link for creating the lists to use

I exported a list I have in my own Outlook, compiled using the UI, then exported to a text file. But it's a simple email/domain list. No special characters to separate each line, just a list of addresses. The list I created earlier consisted of 1 domain "test.com" just to try it out, but when I specified the location of the file, which I copied from the address bar of Windows Explorer, did the gpupdate /force, and restarted Outlook, it didn't apply the list. Other settings are being applied to Outlook though, such as the filter level, just not the lists.

I would be happy to test this, but unfortunately I'm leaving on vacation in the AM for 4 days..

If you have not found a solution by then I'll see what I can do.

No worries, it's not mission critical, I'll keep cracking away at it. If I find the fix, I'll post the answer here. :-)

by: DReade83Posted on 2009-07-24 at 03:17:53ID: 24933478

Fixed! As crazy as it sounds I had to make modifications to the group policy ADM file and add a missing key with code taken from a site where Outlook 2003 was affected. Even though I'm using Outlook 2007, this has worked and the lists are now importing no problem.
