Question

How do I fix/repair WSUS 3.0 SP1 on SBS 2008?

Asked by: DennisDavis

My WSUS 3.0 SP1 server running on SBS 2008 has stopped working.  Many of the services will not start and I cannot open the WSUS console to administer.  I have read somewhere that you are not supposed to change the default settings.  I ran the best practices analyzer and it has indicated that the default settings have been modified so I suspect this to be the cause although i'm not certain of that.  I am wondering if there is any way to repair or restore WSUS back to the default settings in order to fix this problem?

It should be the same as in 2003 SBS:

thanks for your assistance.

I spoke to soon.  I have followed the article Cris Hanna has provided and all of my services are started successfully.  However when I launch the WSUS console in step 4 I am unable to connect to the server.  It tells me either the server maybe using another port or different Secure Sockets Layer setting.  I am not connecting using SSL and have verified the port in IIS is indeed using port 80.  I have tried connecting using both the name and ip address to no avail.  Any thoughts?

by: CrisHanna_MVPPosted on 2009-08-13 at 13:19:36ID: 25092436

So which steps did you accomplish to get to step 4??   Did you have to re-install?

by: DennisDavisPosted on 2009-08-13 at 13:22:27ID: 25092478

I haven't done anything yet.  I verified the required services were running and then verified the versiion of WSUS i was running in the add programs in control panel.  From there it said to skip to step 4 to repair.  The first step in step 4 is to open the WSUS console which I am unable to connect to my server when the console has been opened.  I haven't done anything else yet.

I'll look at this when I get to my server this evening and post back...   It may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall.

by: DennisDavisPosted on 2009-08-13 at 13:29:28ID: 25092558

Can I just do an uninstall through add/remove programs and download wsus 3.0 sp1?  Or does it need to be reinstalled off the sbs 2008 technologies cd?

by: CrisHanna_MVPPosted on 2009-08-13 at 13:35:17ID: 25092617

need to be reinstalled using disk #2.

by: DennisDavisPosted on 2009-08-13 at 13:40:08ID: 25092681

ok well maybe i will give that a try.  thanks,

by: CrisHanna_MVPPosted on 2009-08-13 at 21:35:40ID: 25095282

Before doing the re-install, When you do the connect to Server, where it says PORT 80, drop that down and try one of the other ports.

by: venemaPosted on 2009-10-16 at 07:27:43ID: 25589860

You have to make an manual entry port 80 in IIS for WSUS. We experienced the same issue.
Only HTTPS showed after a reinstall.
