Question

SBS 2008 Sharepoint and default website down

Asked by: scharping

Last desperate try before I reinstall the machine:

I am running a fresh 2008 SBS.  Standard setup without migration - everything should be clean.
When setting up exchange, I noticed that some wizards regarding internet names and certificates do not work.  On research I learned, that the default web site is down and sharepoint reports errors - this seems to be the cause of all despair.

In IIS Manager Sites -> Default Web Site is marked down.  When I try to start it, I get "website could not be started - possibly another web site is using the same port".  Needless to say I did not change anything from default setup and I did not install any software that might block Port 80.  When I stop the service and try to access Port 80 nothing answers.

Also in system log I get a lot of 5586 and 3760 Errors of unknow origin.  The first one states "unknow SQL-Exception 2812.  COuld not find stored procedure 'dbo.proc_getNewObects'.
The latter states that some cryptic SQL-Database "SharePoint_Config_ad586...." could not be found on SQL Server instance <something rahter>.
Cannot open database "SharePoint_Config_ad568963-5033-41a9-9033-8fb30239fdbe" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'NT-AUTHORITY\NETWORK_SERVICE'.

(I am using German language version - some translations might be inaccurate)

After default Installation I installed Symantec BackupExec 12.5 with patches - other than that the machine is running Fujitsu default Server Management tools and nothing else.

Any hits in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Ok the first thing sounds like another website is using the same port as the comapnyweb.

Go to the IIS manager.
Open the server, then sites.
Click SBS Sharepoint.
Choose bindings on the right.
Make sure the host header companyweb on port 80

backupexec installs it's own SQLExpress instance so this could possibly be interfering with sharepoint the first thing is to remove backupexec to rule that out and then restart.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 01:24:21ID: 25104557

Also forgot to say check the bindings on the other sites to see what else is using port 80 - don't worry about changing anything at the moment just report back your findings.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 01:34:50ID: 25104576

Also have a look at the SBS repair guide: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd430085(WS.10).aspx

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 01:36:06ID: 25104579

Your soothing tone feels so good to hear.

This is what I found:
Sitebindings for Sharepoint:
http   Companyweb   80   *
https                          987  *

Other Services on Port 80:
default Web site with no hostname
SBS Web Applications with internal and dyndns hostname
SBS Client deployment with hostname SBSConnectComputer

BackupExec is uninstalling right now - reboot pending.

Nothing changed after removal of Backup Exec and reboot.  Will try SBS repair guide next.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 02:23:31ID: 25104638

If it is a completely fresh install and you have no data on it and it's not a migration it may be quicker to rebuild than to trouble shoot?what is the situation?

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 02:23:34ID: 25104639

The repair guide does not really help.
I can't execute most commands because I can't i.e. access SharePoint Administration.

I remember one thing though:
During setup of SBS you are forced to create a administrator account I named it - let's say admin1.  After setup I created another administrator account ("admin2") in SBS and later deleted the inital administrator admin1 because I had some profile issues on another machine in the domain.

There is an article in the repair guide which talks about this issue.  It seems that the original administrator is owner of the sharepoint site and if it is deleted, that causes trouble.
I am unable to execute the commands stated, though.  It seems the service is not listening.  I don't get a decent error message, thogh.  It only sais "error in command line" or something of the sort.

Could this be the root of all evil?

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 02:33:49ID: 25104664

Yes that's more than likely your cause.
Can you not login to the central admin site at all?
It may be worth re-creating that admin account you deleted.

Didn't realise you had other clients etc attached so we will troubleshoot.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 02:38:59ID: 25104681

Have a look here for recreating administrator account and access: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd440854(WS.10).aspx

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 02:41:05ID: 25104685

I have one terminalserver attached.  Rebuilding would be a pain, but I'd much rather do it now than next week...

I tried this guide - this is where I got the idea that might be the problem.
The first command fails.  I only get "error in command line" - nothing I could work with.

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 02:59:40ID: 25104718

Status:
I recreated the initial admin account with the same password.
I also activated the "Administrator" account in Active Directory Users and Computers, and assigned a known password.
In addition I have the current SBS-created admin account.

Systemwise I can log on as all three.  I cannot access the SharePoint admin site at all.  I get "Connection to configuration database could not be established" or something of the sort.

Just now I rebooted the machine to look and see if SharePoint will boot now that it's initial user credentials are valid again.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 03:25:15ID: 25104763

Ok I think your best bet is to remove the intranet component by modifying the Small Business Server setup in add/remove programs reboit then reinstall it, when you remove it make sure you remove the contents of the sharepoint SQL folder in program files under SQL server, sorry cannot remember exact path.

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 03:27:04ID: 25104768

OK, will do that next.

No change after reboot.  It seems SharePoint wants to log on as NT-Authority\Network Service and fails doing that.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 03:31:20ID: 25104773

I will try and get to a SBS2008 install later so I can guide you further.

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 03:32:42ID: 25104777

Hm - I feel a bit stupid asking this, but I have to:

How do I remove components of SBS?  in Add/remove programs it only tells me to use SBS-Console, and there I don't see anything of the sort...?

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 03:37:37ID: 25104787

I think I found something:

In the event log of IIS in Server Manager I found events stating that the problem with default web site is not prot 80 but 443.
Checking the bindings I found that indeed 443 is bound without a hostname to default and share point.

On another SBS-Machine default web site has no binding on port 443.
Bizarre - I did not touch that.

Should I change it?

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 03:38:51ID: 25104791

Correction - not share point has the second binding of 443, but "WebApplications"

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 03:50:00ID: 25104814

Ok web applicateions is OWA which should be 443

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 03:52:29ID: 25104818

I removed binding for 443 on default website.  Starts up now.  Nothing else improved, though.
Machine is rebooting...

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 04:15:05ID: 25104876

Nothing new.
Found a Microsoft SBS2008 repair CD.  Uploading.  Will check what that can do for me.

Still haven't found a way to remove intranet components.

Under administrative tools are you able to launch "sharepoint products and technologies configuration wizard" ?

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 06:12:01ID: 25105287

I have a bit of trouble finding the corresponding tools in the German language Version.  I think what you mean is the sharepoint administration website at http://hostname:24449 ?  No - I can't access that.  I get "Connection to configuration database could not be established"

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 06:23:48ID: 25105320

No sorry it's not that one, in the UK version it appears under this one on the list.

Click Start > Administration tools > SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard

In google translator it translates it as: SharePoint-Produkte und-Technologien-Konfigurations-Assistenten

I know that's a literal translation but that's the best I can do, I don't speak German unfortunately ;-)

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 06:30:59ID: 25105344

Found it - it's Konfigurationsassistent für "SharePoint Produkte und Technologien" - listed under K.
I get the inital screen, but after clicking continue, nothing happens...

This machine seems to have had it - should I just pitch it and start over?

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 06:32:24ID: 25105350

Wait - it's doing something now.  It didn't get far, though.  But I have a logfile.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 06:33:44ID: 25105358

Ok that should repair the sharepoint install if that doesn't work there is something more sinister at work!

To be honest if there is nothing critical on t yor better off starting again.
Apologies I couldn't be more help!

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 06:36:39ID: 25105365

Darn!  It doesn't look like much - just that owner or login account or something of the sort seems to be confused.
Well, I guess that's it, then.

Do you know this repair-DVD Microsoft is mailing out in their Action Pack?  I'm still upoading, but I don't know what it does.

by: demazterPosted on 2009-08-15 at 06:38:02ID: 25105370

Sorry not seen that one!
Do you not have the original disks?

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 06:48:47ID: 25105411

Sure. This seems to be some magic microsoft thought up to perform repairs.  It doesn't have a howto, though, only a link to the repair-page you sent me...

Oh well - thanks all the same.

by: scharpingPosted on 2009-08-15 at 09:35:08ID: 25105994

Just to sum things up - I tried the repair-installtaion of Microsoft's SBS 2008 Repair-CD as well, but no luck

Re-Installation is running right now.  Thanks to demazter for all your effort.
