Question

SBS 2008 failed install

Asked by: westone

Hi,
I encountered a failed install during the initial setup of a Dell PowerEdge T410 SBS 2008 server. It froze during the restart after configuring all of the initial settings asked for by the setup program that runs when the server is started for the first time. After leaving it frozen for over an hour, I forced a reboot and it went to the desktop. Many, if not all, of the settings I had configured had not been applied.

There was a message displayed about the failed installation but it contained nothing useful beyond the fact that the install had failed. The logs under %programfiles%\Windows Small Business Server\Logs had no error info. The Event Viewer System log contains numerous 4375 & 4385 errors from the time of the freeze. They are all similar but not identical. Here is one:
Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package WUClient-SelfUpdate-Aux-Package-en-US-MiniLP (Feature Pack) into Install Requested(Install Requested) state.

Where do I go from here?  I am uncertain whether to just go ahead and set everything manually, or if it is possible to run the setup again. I am researching the Event IDs now.
Thanks, Bill

I would suggest if this is a new server to wipe the hard drive and use the Dell OS Setup disks to reinstall everything.

Use our guide and start fresh:

Create an answer file and use it to install the SBS 2008 OS:

We suggest not allowing updates to run in the Answer File settings.

Well I have started a fresh install and have run into a problem: Drivers for the NIC. Setup requires the NICs to be functional to proceed. I have supplied the correct drivers, which I downloaded from Dell and verified I had the correct one in a chat session with Dell tech support. 2008 accepted the driver and installed it but the NIC still shows as having a problem in DM (Setup provided access to DM to install the driver). I'm looking for an alternate driver.

Are you using the Dell setup utility to configure the server and prep it before running the SBS OS install disk?

Please do so as part of the prep steps is the software puts the needed drivers on the Dell partition for the OS to pick up and install correctly.

No, where is the setup utility, is it on one of the partitions? The only discs that came with the server are the SBS 2008 discs (2), and a Dell OpenManage disc. Wait, I think there is a 3rd disc that has to do with OpenManage as well (I am not at the office at the moment)

by: westonePosted on 2009-08-27 at 08:08:25ID: 25199099

Ahhh, looking at the Dell website, I see OpenManage is what I am looking for. Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it goes.

by: MPECSIncPosted on 2009-08-27 at 08:56:29ID: 25199686

There is a system prep disk that comes with all Dell servers. It has a Linux OS on it and provides the necessary utilities to configure the server for the OS to be installed along with configuring the RAID controller.

OpenManage is the Windows based application that you install on the server once the OS is there. It gives you low level access to the various server components.

According to documentation at Dell, the server can be booted from the OM disc and the setup utility you referenced can be run from there. A similar setup utility can be run from the utility partition. I'll let you know when I get to the server.
