Question

Trouble configuring Windows FAX Server on SBS 2008

Asked by: manav08

Hi Experts,

1. I have setup a DLINK-DFM562E External Modem on the SBS 2008 Server.
2. Installed the Appropriate Drivers
3. Installed the FAX SERVER ROLE which also worked fine.
4. Restarted the FAX Service on the SBS 2008.
5. Tried Sending FAX using WINDOWS FAX AND SCAN console on SBS 2008 and that worked fine. Fax was recieved succesfully.
6. Now as per guidelines on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc546071(WS.10).aspx opened up WINDOWS SBS CONSOLE -> Network -> Devices -> Configure the Fax Service and in the final step I get the error which is attached. Nothing in the EVENT LOGS at all.
7. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the fax service role but nothing helps. Still get the same error.

On an XP CLIENT -

1. I mapped the printer \\servername\fax and mapping worked fine.
2. But when I try to print to it I get an error message saying - "Fax Server Information cannot be retrieved. The Fax Wizard will close now."

Please help. I guess I would be lucky if someone has come across it before.

OK Guys, seems like I have resolved PART 1 of the issue myself.
Apparently the error logs go to this location - C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Logs\FaxCW.log
Upon investigating I found out that the error is as listed in the CODE SNIPPET below.
I looked for the user called FAX_MAILER_67702  in AD Users and Computers and enabled it. Reran the CONFIGURE FAX SERVICE WIZARD and got all green ticks.
However the XP Client still is having the same problem. Investigating that at the moment.

Have you looked at this guide? Install, configure, and send faxes in Windows XP   http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd346629(WS.10).aspx

Also, Troubleshoot the Fax service  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd346624(WS.10).aspx

Hi CrisHanna MVP,

I had done exactly what the install and configure guide says.
Now as suggested in Troubleshoot guide, I ran a repair on the FAX SERVICE and tried from the XP workstation.
When you open up the FAX CONSOLE by double clicking the "fax on server" printer it says all fax printers are inaccessible. Please help!!!!

What do you have for permissions on the Fax Printer?

by: manav08Posted on 2009-09-01 at 18:31:12ID: 25237576

Hi ChrisHanna MVP,

I resolved the issue myself by Creating a group called FAX USERS -> Adding the user to that group.
Next I went to Windows SBS console->Network->Devices  and added the FAX USERS group to Windows SBS FAX ADMINISTRATORS.
Issue Resolved.
Not sure why it woudn't work when that group was alredy a member of Windows SBS Fax Users Group.
I would like to award you some points so could you please explain why I should need to do the above.

by: CrisHanna_MVPPosted on 2009-09-01 at 18:53:01ID: 25237645

It's very hard to say, because I can't see what the group looked like before.  But when you can do something from the server, but can't from a workstation, it's almost always permissions.
