OpenOffice via Client Apps SBS 2003

Hi All,

Trying to install Openoffice via Clientapps in SBS 2003,

I extracted the openoffice installation, placed it under "clientapps" folder on the sbs 2003 server, then assigned it to a single client computer  ; nothing is happening on the client, after logging off and loging back on

Also, when I check shares on the sbs server mgmt, it shows as one connection to the clientapps share.

Any step by step how-to or experience would be great, i need to get this done before i leave today :-)

Kind regards

Depending on how Open Office is setup up, it may or may not work.

For distributing software via Computer specific GPO:
http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2007/03/sbs-2k3-gold-sp1-r2-installing-software.html

Note that you need to GPUpdate /force then reboot the client workstation for the policy to take.

Hi Patrick and MPECSinc,
Thank you for your reply.
the scenario is :
I have just took over this network ; they already had SBS 2003 configured and lots of group policies applied to lock the machine downs completely ; the users can only use IE and Outlook, no other menus, shortcuts appear.
I downloaded openoffice and extracted it so I can get to the MSI file, then copied the whole extracted folder to the clientapps folder
I then assigned the application to just one computer (to test) via SBS assign application wizard ; pointed it to the "\\server\ooffice\setup.msi" with quotes
Now, when I logoff the user and log back on, nothing happens at all ?
please can you provide a step by step or give any advises as to what may be blocking it or where shall I look ?
Kind regards

Should be \\Server\ClientApps\OOffice\setup.msi for the path.

For machine assigned software distribution the system needs:
 + gpupdate /force [Enter]
+ reboot the computer for the software to take.

Philip
Hi Philip,
Thanks for your prompt reply, it says to close the path in Quotes " " ?
I did the gpupdate /force on the server (their is no command line available on the desktops)
rebooted the client pc - no avail ?
I will try it again in the morning and will update you.
Much appreciated
You only need the quotes for a path that has a folder name that contains a space. Otherwise the path is fine as indicated.

You missed the \ClientApps\ folder in your original post about the path. That is why I clarified the correct path to the software install.

START (key) + R --> CMD [Enter] will bring up the command prompt or you can just do the START+R key sequence and punch in GPUpdate /force.

An alternative is to bring up the Task Manager and New Task --> CMD [Enter].

Hi Philip,
Do you think I should have to disable some of the group policies for me to be enable to deploy the application to these users ?
As, the previous team had completely (I mean completely) locked down, you can't open anything, even in the web browser its restricted to a few sites and if you type in the web browser c:\ it will just access denied.
Any thoughts on that ?
Much appreciated
Any application that is delivered via machine specific GPO setting will be elevated on its own as it will run with the system service.

Philip
Hi Philip,
Thanks for your reply:
I tried :
a) Extracted the openoffice installer to get the msi package
b) Placed the extracted content under Clientapps within a folder called openoffice (\\clientapps\openoffice\)
c)I then Assigned the application to a client computer (browsing to \\server\clientapps\openoffice\openofficeorg31.msi)
d)I rebooted the client machine, nothing happens ?
e) left the test machine on for 2 hours and then rebooted with no install happening

Do you think that some group policy is blocking the install (as i previously mentioned that the desktops are completely locked)
Users only click on start and two options are available either to open IE or outlook or shutdown/logoff.
please help
Do you see anything in the logs from Windows Installer on the client machine? If the installer is initiating the software install but something is blocking it then a log entry will be found.

Philip
How can I access the logs for windows installer on the client machine ?
Its all locked down, no access to my computer, drives etc ;
Appreciate your patience with this.

Hi Philip,
Logged on as admin, installed openoffice locally (as it was giving error when I double clicked the "click to install openoffice" icon)
I installed it locally on the machine, now when I logon as that limited user ; i wasn't able to see the startmenu items for openoffice
then I discovered that their is a GPO redirecting those users start menu items on a share on the server so copy pasted the open office shortcuts on them. problem is that when i log on as the limited user i can see the open office shortcuts but when i click to open it gives a restrictions error.
In GPOs i checked as much as i can for software restriction policies but nothing found yet ; i am on site at the moment ;
would be grateful if you could point in the right direction, thanks for your help so far.
kind regards
Copy the start shortcuts for OO to the AllUsers Programs menu to fix that.

Philip
Hi Philip,
When I further looked into the GPOs for the client (users with locked desktops), there start menu items were redirected as well providing them with a custom start menu and no other options, I logged onto one pc as admin, installed open office and then copied the shortcuts to that folder redirect location (which populated to all users start menu successfully).
I was though getting an error deploying OpenOffice via Clientapps even logged in wtih administrator.
it was sayin cannot open openoffice.msi ; any way its sorted now and i contacted the previous people to provide for all documentation.
Your help is much appreciated as i wouldn't have gone so far without it.
You are welcome! :)

Glad its fixed, on thip tho on the question how to access the log files,

yes you can log on as admin on the computer,
however you can also open event viewer on the server, choose actions and choose: connect to remote computer, type in the computer name (including \\) and you can read them from your server directly! No need to wait for the PC to be available or bother the user with it.
