Question

SBS 2008 Standard

Asked by: mak3366

I recently purchase a new server from Dell with no Software installed because I was going to migrate my 2000 SBS to this new server with an upgrade to the 2008.  I was looking a pricing recently to do this and the cost for migration is $2,719.20.  I can purchase all Open  Volume license for $ 2,468.30 or I can get T72-02654(Retail) and 6UA-02185 times 5 for $2290.00.  I am seeing the OEM on here for even cheaper T72-02453 and 6UA00563.  I am wondering what will work.  We are a small company and I do not want to be spending un-needed money.  I am planning on just installing the new software on the new server then copying over the exchange and active directory information.  I want to make sure that I will be able to do this.

Are you planning a migration from SBS 2000 to SBS 2008 and if so - how do you plan to migrate this as there is no supported migration path?

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-10-13 at 13:42:12ID: 25564330

OEM is a lot cheaper than Fully Packaged Product (FPP) but you have to buy new hardware at the same time to qualify for OEM licenses, although memory and HDD's apparently count I believe.

OEM just means that Microsoft won't support you if you get problems - you need to go back to your OEM license provider to get support from them.

Both will work happily - it is just the cost that can get excessive with FPP.

Also with FPP - you can re-install the software on another box (should you need to).  OEM lives and dies on the same box it was bought for - it cannt legally be transferred.

I was planning that but I was just looking at SBSmigration and I am now thinking it will be easier to migrate to the 2003 and leave it at that for now.  So now I am wondering what would be the best for that.  I can not get 2008 Volume license which I am not worried about.  I just need to know if OEM or Retail is best.

Ok.  That is what I was looking for the difference between FPP(retail) and OEM.  I knew it at one time but had forgotten.  Thanks.
