Question

Get Workstation to Join a Domain

Asked by: cpatte7372

Hi guys,

Really simple one.
Can someone please remind me how to get a workstation to join a domain.
I have a domain called KEYLOOP and I've added the computer name to the 'Domain Computer'. At the moment, the workstation is simply acting as standalone pc and I would like to configure it so that when it boots up it asks what domain to join - Basically, every computer sees the login prompt in any business environment.

I've just forgotton what I need to do to get the workstation to joing a domain.

I'm currently running XP.

Cheers

if the client has a valid IP address you can just open internet explorer and goto http://servername/connect replace servername with the name of your SBS server.

To join a domain right click on My Computer, on the Computer Name tab, select CHANGE and specify the domain

In SBS you should always use the wizards!

by: KCTSPosted on 2009-10-24 at 08:21:44ID: 25652595

Tochce - I didn't spot it was SBS :-)

Use the connect computer wizard

Thanks for your responses guys.

Are you able to assist me with my other request of adding a dns name?

Cheers

P.S.
I guess this post should not have been submitted to 'small business server' sorry

Is it not small business server then?

by: cpatte7372Posted on 2009-10-24 at 08:35:46ID: 25652653

KCTS,

Sorry I forgot to mention that the workstation is XP and the server with the Domain Controller is windows 2003.
Therefore, I guess your post will not be the fix for my problem, correct?

Cheers

1. Right click mycomputer and go into properties
2. Go into computer / names or ID
3. Your will see your workgroup and domain.
4. Choose domain - type the domain name in and click of and enter the admin id and password.

Thanks

Is this SBS or not, if not why have you posted the question in the SBS Zone.

If it IS SBS then you must use the ConnectComputer wizard

If its NOT SBS then use the Computer Name Tab in the Properties on the CLIENT computer - no need to do anything in AD on the server.

jdmailny

Thanks for getting back to me.
Don't know if you saw my previous post, but I managed to figure out how join computer to domain. My concern now is how to add the dns name as shown in the above image.
Any ideas?

You font add the DNS name to the computer properties.

IF this is SBS then you MUST use the ConnectComputer Wizard

The image that you have posted is from the computer account in AD, you dont/cant chnage this !!!

Is your windows server running DNS and DHCP?
If so then the DNS name will be given by your dhcp server.

Alternatively under TCP/IP properties click advanced then under the DNS tab you can enter a DNS suffix.

It all depends what you are trying to do?

KCTS,

I did say that the server isn't a SBS and I that I incorrectly added this question to the wrong forum!

demazter

By asking you the question I think I've answered the question myself. Basically, I was trying to add a workstation to a domain, however I didn't want the workstation to be part of the domain - which really doesn't make sense.

Therefore, I think the question has been answered.

I'm sure I'll be back with another question shortly.

Thanks everyone.

Cheers

I was trying to add a workstation to a domain, however I didn't want the workstation to be part of the domain

That makes no sense at all

What is the image of the Computer account in the Domain all about then ?

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-24 at 09:20:59ID: 25652852

So you want your computer to be on the network but not part of the domain?

Well why didn't you just say so?

Does your server issue DHCP addresses?

You also do not need to create a computer account if your not joining it to the domain?

Perhaps you could tell us what it is you ARE trying to do?

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-24 at 09:22:05ID: 25652859

If the question has been answered would you mind telling us what the answer was?

by: cpatte7372Posted on 2009-10-24 at 09:31:06ID: 25652906

demazter

I actually do want the pc to be on the network but not part of the domain. However, judging by your answer and that of KCTS its either not feasible or not the way to go.

At the moment, the server does not issue DHCP addresses.

I have created a computer account.

Therefore, I think the only answer is make the computer a part of the domain. Correct?

Cheers

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-24 at 09:35:14ID: 25652930

No you can have the computer in the network but not part of the domain, it just needs a valid IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and if you want it to access the Internet and shared resources a valid DNS address.

It's then ON the network but NOT part of the domain

by: demazterPosted on 2009-10-24 at 09:35:48ID: 25652933

Oh and delete the computer account!

by: KCTSPosted on 2009-10-24 at 09:36:34ID: 25652937

If you don't want the machine to be on the domain then you don't need to create a computr account, you can just connect to the domain like it was any other machine on a peer to peer basis. however. as you have a domain controller it would make sense to make it a member of the domain for ease of administration in the long term

by: cpatte7372Posted on 2009-10-24 at 10:21:18ID: 25653188

OK,

Thanks guys.

I have another question about connecting to my server over the internet and DNS. I will start a new question. May be you'll be able help....
