Question

SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 migration on HP server

Asked by: davorin

Hello,

I'm going to migrate from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 on new HP proliant ML350 G6 server.
For installing SW I need to use smart start CD, but for doing migration I need to use answer file on USB key. Can anyone tell me the procedure - from experience.

Thank you for your help!

OK, this is how I do it.
I use the SmartStartUSB CD: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantessentials/foundationpack/downloads.html

I then place the answerfile on that USB drive.

I follow this guide, making sure that all the diagnostic utilities are completed and any errors are resolved BEFORE I start the migration: http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2009/06/sbs-2003-to-sbs-2008-migration-guide.html

The only thing I do is I setup a blank answerfile and then when the Migration starts I use SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt then run services.msc and disable the windows update service then I run devmgr and disable the network card that's not being used.

Thank you for answer.
A few things confused me in your answer.
You said - "I use the SmartStartUSB CD:" Do you mean SmartStart CD or USB Key Utility
Blank answer file? Normally you should put in source server name, surce domain name, ... to properly migrate.
Can you give me a little more detailed instructions (not about migration itself) - like:
Boot server using smart start cd, go thru instalation wizard, when asked insert sbs cd1. After restart sbs instalation begins and at sbs2008 EULA window connect USB key with answer file...
Thank you!

Sorry yes I meant the USB key
I normally enter just the source servername/IP and destination servername/IP in the answerfile.
This pauses the installation allowing you to push SHIFT+F10 before the migration starts and fails!

I would boot the server using the SmartstartUSB pen, with the answerfile on it, then run though the smartstart wizard with the DVD in the drive, this way you don't need to remove the USB pen and the answerfile will be detected.

After the copying files section the server will reboot and say "preparing desktop" a few minutes later the migration wizard will start and read the migration file, and then pause (allowing you to disable the services and the network card in the steps I mentioned earlier)

After you install the SBS OS DVD when prompted by the HP software you wait for the reboot into the OS setup portion. You will be able to set up your partitions and such in the SBS OS WinPE.

When you reach that point you can insert the USB Flash drive. You can confirm that it has been picked up by the OS setup by clicking the Drivers link in the partitioning window and choosing to install new drivers. The Explorer window that opens will allow you to confirm its presence.

We always name our USB flash drives ANSWERFILE so that it is easy to find in this process.

Thank you for your help!
The migration started without any problems.
I just created answer file put it on USB key. I started installtion with smart start cd, I inserted in OS cd when it was asked to. After reboot I inserted USB key.

Demazter:
Few things in your post I didn't liked (disable win. update, disable unused NIC - I did not do that and installation completed without any problems).
Also in the link you posted - You do not need support tools, because that and more than that SBS BPA checks. Also I find unnecessary and not recommeneded to do offline defragmemtation of exchange database...

I have followed the steps as above with the answerfile on my usb pen inserted.  after numerous failed attempts I still have not seen the Migration Wizard appear.
I have followed demazter's post, and at the stage where it says preparing desktop I am just confronted with test network connection wizzard and not MigrationWizzard.  and advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have attached a copy of my answer file created on the SBS 2003 source server.

    @horseman2003:

I would suggest you to open a new question because this question is more than two years old and about your question/comment will be noticed only demazter and MPECSInc if they don't have monitoring on this question disabled.
