Question

Win 7 Pro Remote Desktop theough SBS 2003

Asked by: Smasher999

I have been testing Win 7 for several months in my SBS 2003 network of about 7 clients and 3 users. The probelm is Remote Desktop Connection. The Win 7 Ulttimate RC connected to the domain fine, and RDC worked fin from within the LAN and from outside. I installed the Win 7 64 Enterprise trial, the same. Everything is great. My Win 7 Professional upgrade disks arrive, I install Win 64 on a new machine that the ENterprise 64 trial had been on and worked just fine. Connects to the domain network, but RDC doesn't work from within the LAN or without. I brought in a laptop with an install of the Win 7 64 Enterprise trial that was one of my testbeds, and RDP works as well as it ever did.

Additionally, from the SBS 2003 server, the manage computer remotely function will not work due to an unexplained "network path" error". RDP does not work either. Otherwise, all SBS 2003 functions work fine

Last thing. On the Win 7 Pro client, the firewall will not start. The initial SBS 2003 domain connection install included RDP.

Thanks for any thoughts.

What messages are you getting related to the Windows 7 firewall not starting?

by: dswope79Posted on 2009-10-30 at 08:19:30ID: 25703827

So no error other than "cannot connect"? Buggy install possibly? Firewall not starting, RDP not functioning properly...all strange.

In the Administrative Events Log, I get "Ther Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error Access denied.."

How about doing a repair reinstall from the Win pro 64 disk running from within Win 7.

Very frustrating. Anything to do with the lack of Bitlocker in Professional? Both the Win 7 RC and Enterprise trials had it. Prof does not. Wouldn;t seem to matter though.

by: DerekSchaulandPosted on 2009-10-30 at 08:34:15ID: 25703981

Bit-Locker is not enabled by default when it is included, so this shouldn't cause the problem unless the drive was encrypted in testing and was not decrypted or completely nuked before loading the latest version of Win 7

Any interoperability issues on RDC between Win 7 64 and SBS 2003 anyone has seen?

This may be unrelated but I'll put it out there. Last week a SQL Server 2005 security hotfix on the SBS 2003 box failed to install and thereafter SQL failed to start. Restored the entire harddrive from an Acronis image, and everything worked fine but SQL. Tech found it to be certifcates issue. He deleted one of the server created certificates and SQL worked fine. Ran Internet Connection wizard in SBS2030 to create a new certificate for the internal website and Remote Workplace function, but everything otherwise has run perfectly but for RDC to the Win 7 Pro machine. Seems a stretch that his could have anything to do with it.

I hate to fdisk and reinstall Win 7 Pro after activating all of my applications.

I doubt that has anything to dow ith it, if the Enterprise version had no issues, I see absolutely no reason why the Professional version would not function properly. I'm thnking a bad install is what we have here. Do you have UAC off or customized?

by: Smasher999Posted on 2009-10-30 at 08:57:41ID: 25704229

UAC is off. I'll try a repair reinstall and see what happens.

Did a repair reinstall, uninstalled then reinstalled motherboard drivers to get the NIC back, then all was fine with the world. Remote Desktop works fine.

I have the same issue and didn't solve that yet. No machine running Windows 7 can be accesed using RDP via SBS2003
