Question

Microsoft® Hyper-V" Server 2008 R2 is out, and now ?

Asked by: fastitservice

Hi Folks,

I'm going to install a virtualized SBS2008 Premium soon, and am trying to find the correct infos to plan it correctly.

What I need :

- SBS2008 (AD, Exchange, ..)
- Terminal Services
- Fax services
- backup to USB HDD (Ethernet if needed)

I know 'how to' virtualize the thing, but ..

I read alot about all this and found forums and blogs telling Fax Services and UPS were not usable, I would like to know if it is still the case with Hyper-V R2.

If it is, is there any 'workaround' ? (Ethernet Fax cards ?)

I also would like to know if I'll be able to use USB Hard Drives that the customer will plug, unplug .. to backup the servers. If ot, what solution should I use ?

Thanks for your answers,

I think it you actually asked a question, per question, instead of grouping them all together it would be much easier to give you the information you require.

Like with the USB HDD. Okay you want to backup the servers. You want to backup the SBS08 box as well as the TS box. How are these going to be configured? Do you want to have it setup so it will backup as one job? Are you hoping to just use the built-in backup utility or you looking at using other software to do the backup. Are you going to be using mutliple rotating backups? How often and how much data are they going to be backing up.

By having specific questions it makes it so much easier to give you an idea of where to start.

Terminal Services needs to be a seperate system. You cannot run that on the SBS server itself.
You also need to get licences for TS, which are not covered by SBS.

For facing you will need to look at using another machine and software. All Virtual Machine technology suffers from the same problem of limited hardware support. Anything specialised will require the OS to be installed directly on the metal.

For backup, if you are using a virtual machine then you will need to switch to a network based backup, which means a third party tool will have to be used. I usually use Backup Assist.

Finally, as an aside, I do all of my SBS deployments in ESXi, rather than Microsoft's solution. I find it is much lighter, allowing me to put more resources towards the guests rather than what the host needs.

Simon.

Hi

USB emulation are not supported in r2, so you will need to use another physical server and do network backups. You cab use com emulation with third party tools but i would highly recommed steering away fro
this because ofthe overhead

for the ups software I would recommend getting a smart ups with a network card and installing network shutdown on your host

I recommend using backup exec for your vm backups .

Hi,

From your requirements, I'm thinking you might be best served by a physical installation for your SBS 2008 server.  You state that you need Fax Services. Third party product would be the only way to make Fax Services in SBS 2008 work if it is a virtualized install (as plimpias mentions above).

if you drop your Fax Services requirement, you have several virtualization scenarios open up, which can probably be narrowed to one of these:

1) 2nd server license of Server 2008 in Full or Server Core install with Hyper-V role enabled on the host hardware, SBS 2008 virtualized, Terminal Server virtualized using 2nd server virtual license;
and
2) Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on the host hardware, SBS 2008 virtualized, Terminal Server virtualized using 2nd server license.

With (1) you are using Hyper-V that is included in the Server 2008 License, part of SBS 2008 Premium.
With (2) you are using Hyper-V R2 that is included in Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.
(I'm just pointing out that you don't get Hyper-V R2 unless you buy Server 2008 R2, or use Hyper-V Server 2008 R2).

I do not think there have been any changes in Hyper-V R2 that unlock limitations with respect to fax or UPS communications that you have read about related to the original release of Hyper-V.

One backup solution you have with option 1 is to create a VHD on a USB disk, attach to your host, and then pass that VHD through to your virtual SBS server where it will appear as another local disk for you to backup on.  It's not hotswap though.  Another option would be to forego the SBS backup wizards and use Windows Server Backup and push the backup over the network to a networked device attached to the physical network.

Your backup options with option 2 are better; a non-hotswap option is to passthrough the USB disk to the virtual machine, or better, for hotswap use of 2 USB disks you could create a VHD on a USB drive, and then attach that VHD as a SCSI disk to the SBS Server.

For UPS, network attached UPS with network shutdown agents on your virtual systems is going to bring the best results.  You could configure Hyper-V settings to power down virtual systems when the host is powered off, but configuring the host to shutdown might be complicated if you opt for Hyper-V Server that is based on Server Core.

Hope that helps!
