Question

Firewall problem setting up SBS 2008 Standard

Asked by: mikeabc27

I'm trying to set up SBS 2008 for the first time and I'm hitting a problem in the SBS Console > Set up your Internet address. I'm setting my domain manually and although it passes RWW and Exchange, I get a yellow triangle on router.

The port 25, 80, 443, 987 and 1723 are all open and pointing to the server's IP address, so I'm not sure where it's failing.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

That's quite normal it's just because the SBS wizard cannot open those ports on your router so you will have to do it manually.

Your router probably has uPnP disabled (a good thing) so SBS cannot reach in and make changes to the settings.

Required ports:
 + 25 SMTP
 + 443 HTTPS
 + 987 HTTPS

1723 and GRE are optional if using PPTP VPN.

80 is completely optional since all shortcuts should have the "s" after the "http" anyway. A reduced attack surface is preferrable than leaving it open and auto redirecting to 443.

Thanks dematzer - I thought it may be something like that.

Philip - thanks for the link to your suggested checklist.

I'm currently setting up eight XP Pro self-built workstations for this SBS server and would like to keep this open until I've successfully connected at least one

Make sure you use the http://connect wizard to get things up and running on the workstation after the Getting Started Tasks have been run on the server.

Windows 7 Pro OEM that has been downgraded?

This error is related to the firewall/router used for Internet connectivity and should not effect the clients at all.

Just remember when connecting the clients to use the http://servername/connectcomputer wizard (replace servername with the name of your SBS server.

It's also worth double checking that any DHCP service on your router is disabled on the LAN side.
