Unable to login to Windows SBS 2003 R2

I have finished installing SBS 2003 Premium with ISA and Exchange configured and working for a client. After I left, the client added some infected machines onto the domain and now the server is infected with "virut" virus. This particular virus infects all .exe and .scr files. The symantec endpoint protection installed has detected it. After running manual scan on the server it did detect and disinfected the files. However, when I restarted the server, I am unable to login. After inputting the right credintails, I get this 'loading the computer settings' screen and goes back to the login screen again.

I have had similar problem on Windows XP and have managed to expand the userinit.ex_ file to system 32 and got it back up. However, I am unable to do the same for SBS 2003.

Can someone show me the right thing to do here?

Should work on Windows 2003 as well, I just did it a couple of weeks ago on an infected 2003 machine. Were you not able to locate the file or it still loops when you copy it over.

Also you should use remote registry editor and look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon key and change userinit.exe with the right one.

Hi,

The userinit value may have been corrupted by the removal of blazefind. It adds wsaupdater.exe to the logon value in the system registry, sometimes appending it, sometimes replacing it. Running
Adaware or other cleaners detects and removes wsaupdater.exe, but doesn't
correct the registry damage. If this is the case, then you may need to load
the registry hive from another installation and change it. This is the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Userinit string value should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

On the damaged installations it's one of these:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

Another "quickie" method of resolution is to load the Recovery Console (see
below), copy userinit.exe as wsaupdater.exe from the command prompt, then
restart normally. Once in, go and change the registry value back to what
it's supposed to be and delete the copied file. To do this, use these
commands:

C:\Windows>
C:\Windows>copy C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe
C:\Windows\system32\wsaupdater.exe

Then you can exit once completed.

This can also be done by using the 6 disk boot floppy set mentioned in the
above article, as it loads enough of the Recovery Console so that you can
copy the file. This is particularly useful if you have an OEM installation
that includes only a Restore CD, or no disk at all.

Thanks, I am now able to login. The problem was with the registry. I remotely connected the server registry and found out that the userinit value name and data was deleted. I entered it again and logged on perfectly.
