Question

SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 migration change network configuration to use one NIC

Asked by: dalsandhu

I am in the process of migrating SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 in a home/office environment and am having trouble with the configure network stage of the SBS 2003 server preparation which requires changing it from using 2 NICs to using 1 NIC.

Original set up is:

Router with DHCP server, IP Address 192.168.1.254, serving up IP Addresses 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.237 (and fusion handsets: 172.16.1.1 - 172.16.1.253)

SBS Server 2003:
Belkin Ethernet adapter network connection - IP: 192.168.1.65, DNS: 192.168.16.2
Broadcom Ethernet adapter server local area network connection - IP: 192.168.16.2, DNS: 192.168.16.2

Belkin NIC is external and connected to the router
Broadcom NIC is internal and conncted to a dummy router

Other PCs/Devices connected to internet via router

What I did was unplug the network cables from both NICs and plug the router cable into the internal Broadcom NIC. I then disabled the Belkin NIC in device manager.

Next I rebooted and ran CEICW. This ran without complaining.

ipconfig /all now lists:
ethernet adapter server local area connection - IP, DNS, WINS: 192.168.16.2

I lost internet connection from the SBS server and all devices on the network and could not connect to the router.

I have restored back to orginal config.

Any suggestions on how I should have proceeded?

Thanks

Well I see your first issue.  SBS Needs/Likes to be it all. DHCP and everything.  The reason for this is so that DNS can register the addresses and names in DNS.  I do not know why so many people move this role to a router.  It almost always causes issues on the SBS.  Second before I can tell you why you lost internet I need to know all of your IP Settings.  Was your gateway pointed to the right address?  Please run ip config and list those settings again after your disable the network card.  That is all you should have to do is disable the belkin nic.  Are your forwarders setup in DNS?  Can you ping the router and 4.2.2.2 and can you ping yahoo.com from the command prompt.  Please let me know.

Tucker

OK. The source server IP settings prior to disabling NIC are:

Gateway is router IP address so think that's pointing to the right address... (sorry - total beginner at this).

Re forwarders - i don;t know what these are so will look them up. Do I need to check these before I disable the NIC or after?

Thanks

ah - i suspect dhcp should be enabled...

If I just disable the belkin nic and don't change the cables there is nolonger a physical connection to the router and therefore to the internet. Are you sure that's all I need to do?

by: suthnginPosted on 2009-11-04 at 07:32:53ID: 25740307

Isnt your router plugged into your switch?  Ahh I see the issue.  Your using your SBS as a router as well.  You have two routers just to get out to the internet.  You only need one router.  Since you disable your belkin you can not get to the router because the other nic is missing the gateway.

Here is what you need to do:
Disable the Belkin NIC (Don't Use it again EVER!)
Plug in your router to the LAN switch
Setup your Gateway on the other NIC to 192.168.1.254
Change the IP Address of your NIC on the SBS to the same subnet so make it 192.168.1.2 (make sure there are no other devices using that address first, if so then pick another one)
Update the DNS setting on the nic so that it points to 127.0.0.1
Make sure the Forwards are set to your ISPs DNS Servers in DNS
Once you do that then enable DHCP on the SBS Server and setup the scopes as you need them to be.
Once you do that you should be able to get out on the internet with no issues.

Tucker

Thanks. It's not actually my network, I'm doing this for a friend/client. He told me that the 2 NICs are set up to increase security...

Am working down your list...

I have updated the remaining nic and receive replies for pings to the router, 4.2.2.2 and yahoo.com - so that's progress.

Where do you set up the forwarders?

Cheers

To add to suthngin's comments:
Do not manually change the LAN NIC of the SBS. This will "break" DNS, Sharepoint, and many other services on an SBS, and in some cases is not recoverable. Make sure you use the "Change server IP" wizard located under Server Management / Internet and E-mail. Disabling the WAN NIC is fine.
Understanding the Change IP Address Tool
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServerSolutions/SBS/en/library/43dd693a-0cc4-47fd-94c7-cfe200439f411033.mspx?mfr=true

After doing these you need to re-run the CEICW, to re-establish the Internet connection, DNS, and configure the DNS forwarders.

SBS has a few peculiarities, and needing to use the wizards is one.

You may also want to read the following regarding DHCP from the router to SBS:
Set up DHCP on existing SBS
See "Configuring Settings for an Existing DHCP Server Service on Your Network" 1/2 way down the page.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc747341.aspx

One other point, for the record, SBS2008 does not support 2 NIC's.

Thanks for that. I had actually already changed the SBS IP address manually - so perhaps it explains the following error I got when running the Change IP Address Tool:

--START--
04/11/2009 16:43
Current User:  tim
Old IP Address:  192.168.16.2
Old 'intended' IP Address:  192.168.16.2
Old Subnet Mask:  255.255.255.0
New IP Address:  192.168.1.2
New Subnet Mask:  255.255.255.0
ModifyPrivateNicProperties returned OK
ConfigureDns returned OK
*** ConfigureDHCP returned ERROR 800706ba
"Generic Error"; hr is 0x800706ba.
Error message box (msg id 10): An error occurred while changing the IP address. Your server might be partially configured. We recommend that you run the Change IP Address Tool again and enter the original IP address of the server.

If this error message appears again, ensure that the local network adapter is enabled in Network Connections and that it is connected to a switch or hub that has power. Also, open Services, and ensure that any services having a startup type of Automatic are running.
-- END --

I noted that DHCP server wouldn't start (set to Automatic) once I used the tool.

Do you think it is a problem that the router is still running DHCP (range 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.237)?

I also looked in DHCP management on SBS and 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.9 are excluded. Scope Options lists 192.168.1.2 for '003 Router', '006 DNS Servers' and '044 WINS/NBNS Servers'. Don't suppose that's significant?

I have restored it back to its working 2 NIC config, and rerun all steps to the Change IP Address Tool, but each time, I get the error I listed above.

Any additional ideas?

Thanks.

>>"Do you think it is a problem that the router is still running DHCP (range 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.237)?
"SBS will shut down its own DHCP service if it detects another DHCP server on the network. You will need to shut it down first as per the article I provided.
You may want to plan this carefully as it will affect your IP phones.

The DHCP scope options you referenced are configured by running the CEICW

Not sure how to repair the Change Server IP wizard error. SBS is very fussy about changing the LAN IP.
If it works with the current IP you might be better changing the Belkin configuration to match that of the SBS's subnet.

by: suthnginPosted on 2009-11-04 at 12:48:02ID: 25743734

You need to turn off the dhcp on the router.  There can only be ONE dhcp server on a network. I have never had the issues you are talkng about. If once you do that and DHCP still does not work then I would suggest uninstalling DHCP and reinstalling it.  I have seen this Many many times.  If you are not familure with Windows and SBS then make the changes using the CEICW wizard.

Tucker
