Question

sbs 2008 stopped receiving external traffic

Asked by: norbs101

SBS 2008 server is not receiving response traffic only outside incoming traffic.  I.e. DNS recursive queries fail.  Pings to outside networks don't work.  All internal traffic works.  However, incoming traffic like OWA works.

any help would be appreciated.

http://serverfault.com/questions/37489/small-business-server-2008-not-responding-to-external-dns-queries

Have a look at the above link :

Also try to use forwarders in your DNS configuration and it will resolve :

In DNS MMC (Start > administrative tools > DNS) right click on your DNS Server and take properties, then click on forwarders tab and enter 4.2.2.2 as one of them, also input your ISP's dns servers as well.

Hope this helps

Forwarders are have been set all along.

The dns wouldn't explain why ping wouldn't work by IP.

What do you mean by : SBS 2008 server is not receiving response traffic only outside incoming traffic

I didn't realized the problem - thats my mistake

do  you mean that you can't ping any outside public ip address ?

Have you tried disabling the firewall on the SBS machine ?

Also, what are the settings for dns recursion on your sbs server's dns properties ?

do  you mean that you can't ping any outside public ip address ?

Yes..      I can ping and browse all internal traffic.  Exchange is receiving mail.  RDP from external connections work.  I'm tracing the tcp traffic on the router and if's successfully forwarding the response traffic back to the server.

Have you tried disabling the firewall on the SBS machine ?

Disabling the firewall ceases all external  traffic to and form the server.

Also, what are the settings for dns recursion on your sbs server's dns properties ?

Disable Recursion check box is NOT checked in the properties.
