Windows SBS 2008 DCPROMO fails - The Replication Operation Failed to Allocate Memory

Hello all.

I am attempting to add a new SBS 2008 server to a domain that currently has a single Windows 2000 server (non-SBS).  Once the migration is done, the old 2000 server will be retired.

I ran the ADPREP tools and cleared all the logs on the old server.

Everything looks like it is about to work, but I get an error at the last second that  "Active Directory Domain Service could not install. The Replication operation failed to allocate memory."

Someone else had this problem and the accepted solution was to "continue setup wizard to make it DC.. the icon should be on desktop or you can do it from add/remove programs."

However, I cannot find this "continue setup wizard" ANYWHERE!  Is there a command that I can type to manually start it?

Alternatively, if there is no way to start the "continue setup wizard" is there another solution?

Please help!

You have not provided much info about how you are trying to migrate to SBS2008, but I suggest you read this first.

There is only one server currently - a Windows 2000 (non-SBS) server.  I am trying to replace that with one Windows 2008 SBS server.

The article linked above says to "remove any Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers" but this is not an option, since the ONLY controller and server on the domain is running Windows 2000.

I have done this type of migration using ADPREP and then the the DCPROMO wizard (run as administrator) before (which is exactly what I am trying to do now), but have never skipped a version (it worked when going from 2000 to 2003 or 2003 to 2008.)  Here, I am going directly from 2000 to 2008, skipping 2003 in the process.

The continue setup wizard was a function of SBS 2003.
SBS is very fussy about how it is installed and configured and the migration process is very particular. Running DCPromo is part of the basic server install with SBS 2008.

There are migration paths and documentation for migrating 2003 to 2008 but I have yet to see anything from 2000. The ultimate is produced by www.swingmigration.com but they do not provide documentation for your scenario either. To do a migration is difficult even when supported as by default SBS wants to be the first DC in a domain. Thus a standard server migration process does not work.

SBS is totally dependent on wizards. It is very important these wizards are used to set up the server, join computers to the domain, and create users. The wizards will assure all users have the correct permissions, directories, and services associated with their accounts. Where you are coming from 2000 even if you can successfully achieve the migration many of the functions of an SBS environment will not be available to your users.  I would recommend staring fresh with a n SBS 2008 install, disjoin the PC's from the old domain, and rejoin the new, and then copy over the data.

What about the regular SBS Setup Wizard in 2008 (I can't find that either?)  (rather than the "continue setup wizard")

I will be happy to set up any SBS environment functions from scratch if I can just add the new 2008 server to the domain.  All the workstations have local profiles and I am really trying to avoid backing them up, joining each one to the new domain and restoring the profiles.

ps- Philip Elder has an excellent blog which includes an SBS 2008 setup guide that may be of help to you:

I have the SBS console; I originally installed AD when I installed the server software but removed it in order to try to add it to my existing domain.

Unless I hear otherwise in the next day or two, I guess I'll have to do this the long way and set it up as a controller for a new domain and then manually have to migrate every workstation and it's user profile.
If you removed AD you will have to start fresh and re-install SBS from scratch. You can then manually remove the old workstations from the existing domain and join to the new domain. Make sure you familiarize your self with the various methods/wizards as SBS is quite different than Server std and very important to use the wizards such as when joining a domain you use a web browser and  http://connect
