Question

SBS 2008 NetLogon service not starting. Cannot logon to server, no services are starting.

Asked by: mhdcommunications

Over the weekend something happened to my server. It's a single server environment, SBS 2008 w/ Exchange + SQL, DHCP, AD, DNS, IIS, etc. The server comes up fine, and i get the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen, but it tells me the Netlogon service is not running, cannot logon.
Updates are scheduled for Wednesdays, so i know that didnt happen. No power outages as my desktop w/o a battery backup was still on w/ my spreadsheet open. I have rebooted the server in Safe mode, Safe Mode w/ Networking, and Normal - No luck. I tried to connect to the services console in normal mode, but get "Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable". When i connect to the service console under Safe Mode w/ networking, i can get in, but of course, nothing will start. I cannot get into the eventviewer the same way.
I need this server up ASAP! Can i just run a repair? Do i need to restore AD and Reg from a backup? If i do, how? I dont see AD restore mode in the advanced OS boot options.
Thanks.

I'm in DSRM, but it's running VERY slow, and I can't figure out how to get my system state off the tape. I'm using Backup exec 12.5, and none of the services will start.

Excuse the double post as I'm using my phone. Forgot to mention none of the services start due to dependencies. I cannot see any dependencies in ANY service.

I was able to run a registry repair in DSRM and then reboot into normal mode, and logon as a domain user. I would say 70% of all services that are supposed to be running said Stopping when i logged on. I wanted to run an OS repair from the SBS CD, but apparently that is not an option. I need this server up ASAP!

Have you called Symantec Tech Support to get detailed instructions on a full restore of the system?

by: mhdcommunicationsPosted on 2009-11-24 at 10:42:32ID: 25900097

Yes, and they stated that i would need a working machine w/ Backup Exec to get the data off. I installed the tape drive and software on a server i had at home, and was able to get the data off that way.
Contacted MS and they screwed the server up even more. The server was stuck in a constant reboot: no safe-mode, nothing. I decided to fire MS, and continue with restoring the registry/hive files.
Steps:
Install Backup Exec on a seperate server w/ Tape drive
Inventory the Tape
Catalog the Tape
Restore files to a CD or thumb drive.
Boot to SBS 2008 CD - Select repair
Get into the command prompt, and replace the old Hive files with the new ones.
Reboot.

Server came up like a champ after that. Myself, as well as MS, are baffled as to why this happened. No updates, installs, changes, at all were made. The server is connected to a 1500va APC UPS, and was just tested to be 100% ok. I blame it on ghosts.
