migrating from sbs 2003 to sbs 2008

hi there,
i`m going to migrate one of my customers sbs 2003 to a new server with sbs 2008 installed on it.
i have the new servers and the old servers with all current data will be available to me in a few days.
i want to prepare the sbs 2008 ahead of time so i can save time.
i read microsoft sbs 2008 migration document.

my first question on the subject is can i install the new sbs 2008 allready and then i`ll migrate to it with the answer file.
as part of the migration process both servers need to be on the the same domain... how can i do it.. ? do i install the new sbs 2008 and when i get the servers i join it into the sbs 2003 domain ?
forgot to mention - both sbs will have the same domain name.
i don`t care about the computers since we only got a terminal server (no client comps) - and i`m installing a new ts 2008 r2 and manually moving all data (i would like to hear tips on it also)

thanks in advance

Check out alanhardisty's migration guide: http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2009/06/sbs-2003-to-sbs-2008-migration-guide.html

Damn good. All your answers are there.

There can be only one SBS in a domain, so you cannot have both running at the same time if the domain name is to be the same. You will need to migrate the data from SBS 2003 then import it into SBS 2008.

so best resolution is to change the domain name ? i can do it, i prefereed no to since the domain name is to my liking.
so as i see it i got 2 options:
1. change the new domain name to smt else and work as ms guide suggests.
2. use the same domain name on the following conditions:
a. wait until the servers will be available and then make the new sbs 2008 part of the sbs 2003 domain network...
b. start working on the new sbs 2008 and manually migrate data

?

In a migration scenario, you CAN have two SBS servers on the same network.

Back to the original question:

In a 2003 to 2008 migration, you create the answer file BEFORE SBS 2008 is installed. It will be read by the SBS installer during the initial installation phase of SBS 2008.  Therefore YOU don't have to join the SBS 2008 machine to te domain, the installer will do this for you as part of the installation based on the answer file and will automatically set up SBS in "migration mode."

Because of this, you cannot pre-install SBS ahead of time though. You must install SBS only when it can be on the same network as tge 2003 server so it can properly join the domain and perform other migration steps.

HTH,

roybridge: i can have two sbs on the same domain for 21 days (an event will show up in the event log)..
cgaliher: 10x, in all microsoft articles that i found i can install the sbs and after the os loads (like the sbs 2003 installation where you can install the sbs and the drivers and then continue the sbs install and cfg) then select to migrate..
well since i have time before i get the production servers i will check it out and decide which time consuming method i`ll choose ;)

thanks all :)

hi,
finished migrating the AD and the mail boxes,
i used admt and exmerge

now how can i migrate the public folders ? i`m talking on different domains without trust
should i export the public folders using outlook and importing them using outlook on the new domain and manually fixing the permissions ?
any other ideas ?

thanks again
Export the public folders to a PST using Outlook as a backup. Then, follow this to migrate:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc527516%28WS.10%29.aspx
allready exported imported. i had to use the "exmerge" user i created earlier for the import-mailbox of the .pst
10x all
only some of the answers helped me and part of them..
FYI - the migration guide linked to in the first post is not my guide, it is Philip Elder's!

Thanks

Alan
