SBS console crashes and will not open
I recently installed a SBS 2011 w Ex 2010 server, and the SBS console refuses to open. Everytime to you try to open it, it states that program needs to close. The part that is making this difficult to resolve is that is not posting any errors in Event viewer and not sure what to look at.
Where and how should I start to look at to resolve this problem?

Are you sure you're looking in the right place for errors... After recently being disappointed in not finding an error in either the system or application log I found it instead in Applications and Services Logs\Windows Small Business Server 2008\Microsoft-Windows Small Business Server Operational.

I checked that location but I dont those choices, they're other options in that folder. I checked those logs and nothing in regard to SBS Console.
There is a known problem with the SBS 2011 console crashing. It is slightly different than what you are describing but worth having a look at:

Hey RobWill, that is exactly what I am seeing. I tried what was in the article and it still not working for me. Any other suggestions?
Was the Windows Search Service not running? If so after making the changes I would reboot to make sure all services start in the appropriate order then re-test the console.

Rob, it was set to Automatic(delayed Start). I changed it to Automatic, and restarted the service. I will try to reboot and let you know. I am not sure if I can get away with it now.
Delayed start should have been OK, but reboot is worth a try.

I was finally able to restart the server and same thing, it still will not open.
The only other known issue I know of is below, but that would likely only occur on a migrated server and generally only causes problems after the console is open. Basically the admin permissions have to be updated. But you don't even get that far:

Rob, I have been on the phone with Microsoft for 4 and hlaf hours. They finally found the problem, they found that in Group policy some how app data folder in the profile was being redirected to a folder on the server and causing the problem. The console was looking for the app data folder and it wasnt in the appropriate location. I will let you know what they did exactly once theyre done.
I can see where that would take a while to locate.
Was it a migration from a previous SBS version?

Very similar issue. SBS 2011 (Fresh install on new hardware.) After working without issue for several months, the SBS Console application would not display. Task manager shoes the executable is running but no disply.
Solution: Set this application to run in Windows XP SP2 Compatability mode. ???? Hoping that a pending server reboot (after applying O/S updates) has caused this abnormal effect.
