Migrate Windows 2008 SBS to Windows Server 2012 Standard
We've got a client that is currently running Windows 2008 SBS, they no longer need exchange and have no use for sharepoint so we're looking to move them onto Windows server 2012. Has anybody done this?
In my mind i would install server 2012 and promote to a DC and then move the roles across and then depromote the SBS machine. However i know Microsoft better than that and i'm sure its not that simple.
Any advise would be appreiated.

It is that simple and yes I've done it. Minor caveat. Uninstall exchange before you demote your 2008 server to cleanly remove the exchange objects from AD.
Why not migrate to Server 2012 Essentials instead?

We've got 27 users so i think 2012 Essentials has a maximum of 25 so wont be any good?
I know 2012 is quite new but it seems as they wont be spending this type of money again for some time it would seem more beneficial to them when providing a quote that we give them the latest OS possible.
Sounds like a good plan to remove exchange first, i guess this means you have to remove all the mailboxes (as they used to use exchange) first before uninstalling from programs and features?

Yes. Clean up.

Ok thanks, Their Mail store is about 200GB and i'll have to archive all the users so they'll always have a copy for future reference, i dont suppose there's an easy way of doing this? Its a bit of a chore downloading each users mailbox and creating a PST out of it.
To automate that would require 2rd party tools.

Rancy that sounds interesting, would that export the mailboxes to PST but leave the exchange database untouched?

ok i've got this working but on some of the mailboxes i get the following error:
The Mailbox exceeded the maximum number of corrupted items specified for this move mailbox operation
This exchange server is no longer in use but i just want to keep a record of what was there before decommissioning it.

Ok so i think i've figured it
Get-Mailbox | Export-Mailbox -BadItemLimit 10000 -PSTFolderPath z:\
Get-Mailbox | Export-Mailbox -BadItemLimit 10000 -PSTFolderPath z:\
What is the limit your specifying with the move ?

The -BadItemLimit is to skip corrupt messages, i've set it to 10000 as i just want everything
Humm .... seems a lot of issues
If that doesnt happen my recommendation is to take data into PST using Outlook then migrate the mailbox and Import.

Well the following worked just great, i don't need to import these as its an old system and its just to refer back to if ever required
Get-Mailbox | Export-Mailbox -BadItemLimit 10000 -PSTFolderPath z:\ worked perfect in the end
Is there a similar command to export the public folders?

Well I've uninstalled exchange no problem, we're due to migrate this coming weekend, i don't suppose anybody's got a breakdown of the procedures to use to do the migration, will it be just the same as migrating from a non SBS machine now exchange is now longer installed?
Yes. Use the migration guides for the individual roles just as if this weren't SBS.
ASKER
OK thanks. Will update very soon.
ASKER
Well all went very smoothly, just did a migration as per standard server after exchange was uninstalled.
I would say let the Exchange or Sharepoint services to be off and use the server as a normal DC\GC.
