The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

If you just need to access the "All Users" Desktop on the client workstations, you can simply open Windows Explorer on the server and type, in the address bar, \\<name of workstation>\C$\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

To perform the work remotely and assuming the Vista PC is in the same LAN as the SBS, simply click Start, Run, type mstsc and press OK. Enter the name or IP of the server and connect, entering credentials when prompted. If you are doing this outside the LAN you will need to have preconfigured a form of remote access with appropriate ports forwarded through the NAT firewall - forwarding TCP 3389 to the internal IP of the SBS server is the easiest way, but you could dabble with a VPN if you wanted more security and/or functionality.

The problem is not being able to access documents and settings, I can do that already. You see i need to work all three computers as if I was sitting in front of them like I do now except remotely, when I try opening port 3389 in the nat firewall so far the canyouseeme.org can't see it. other people seem to work their networks remotely using the win sbs 2003 as the junction to the other computers and some are having trouble when I looked it up in the knowledgebase. I am sure it can be done I am still having trouble I'll be back on it today. tnx for your help. bobnijip

Can you please clarify exactly what it is you need to be able to do, it's a bit confusing from your above post.

If you want to access the server remotely open port 3389 and forward it to the internal IP of the SBS server. To remote into desktops, you can RDP to the server and then RDP from server to individual workstations, using the server as a gateway if you like.

If you're entering the correct external IP address into the RDP box to access the server (you need to use the external WAN static IP of the firewall) then there must be some problem with the forwarding on port 3389, either it is not applied correctly in the firewall or the ISP is filtering it. Ensure that the firewall rule is forwarding TCP 3389, not UDP 3389, failing that you'll need to speak to the ISP for assistance.

Hi, a quick question do you know how to run remote desktop from the server ? I need to see the desktops of the other computers this would include restarting them if necessary in order to perform maintainance that requires restarts. also when it restarts will I be able to begin work again by signing in from the server.
The other problem was to connect to the server remotly from the laptop to do the same . port 3389 is on the tcp I will have to call the isp for sure. to help set up the remote laptop but to work the other stations thats still a challenge. tnx for your help bobnijip

After you're remote desktopped into the server from the Vista PC, you then go to Start, Run and type mstsc in the run box. A new window appears, where you specify the name or IP address of the PC on the LAN which you want to RDP in to. You can then connect, login and control it remotely through the server (which you are then controlling remotely through the Vista PC). It goes around the houses a bit, but it does work very reliably.

You'll need to make sure though that Remote Desktop is turned on in the workstations' remote connection configuration, if it isn't already. Go to Start, Control Panel, System (or System and Maintenance and then System, for category based control panel). On the remote tab, enable the option which allows users to connect remotely to this computer and OK out.

As for the remote into the server, if you have opened the port (and you have entered the correct *internal* IP of your server to forward the requests to) then I suspect it's a firewall elsewhere which is blocking it. Check with your ISP for details.
