The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

DCOM/Firewall is Blocked VS2008 and IIS on remote system inside firewall.
I am have a devil of a time trying to debug my VS Web project on a SBS2003 network where the IIS that is hosting the web project is a server inside the SBS internal network (not the PDC). Yes, ISA is installed and running (I believe it is the latest supported with all SPs installed).

The problem seems to be an issue with the Debugger_Users group. I have installed the remote debugging tools on the server (and VS2008) and cannot seem to install the Debugger_users group on the local machine. I have even installed the remote debug tools for VS2008 Team Architect on the SBS server... still no debugger_users or any group that looks like it.

In the VS project, I am unable to attach to the machine manually and automatically. The documentation seems to describe a dependency on debugger_users.

Where/how can I create/load this group on the local and/or the SBS machine? Can I create a group named debugger_users? I did this and still am unable to connect.

Thanks for your help with this!!!

The Visual Studio debugger requires DCOM for remote debugging of Visual Basic, C#, SQL, script, and mixed-language applications. DCOM must be installed on the client machine that is running the debugger as well as on the server you are debugging. Windows NT and Windows 2000 machines normally have DCOM installed by default. Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition machines do not. You can install DCOM from http://www.microsoft.com/com/resources/downloads.asp.

By default, installing Visual Studio .NET or the remote debugging components adds you to the Debugger Users group, which enables you to remotely access debugging components on other machines. If you need to add other users to the Debugger Users group, use one of the following procedures.

Thanks for your update. I installed the Remote Debugging Tools via the VS 2008 program files menu and from the original DVD and the outcome is the same; no debugger_users group was installed. Perhaps, DCOM must be installed first? I will install DCOM on the IIS server and rerun/repair/reinstall the debug tools to see if it creates the debugger_user group.

Thanks!

>>> Perhaps, DCOM must be installed first?
This question? Yes, of course. DCOM is a prerequisite. It should be installed prior to any software that may need it, so that the software in question may detect DCOM and take the necessary actions to configure itself accordingly.

I am now able to debug in VS from the Windows XP laptop where the IIS server is hosted on a non-pdc Windows 2003 server using the instructions from my last posting. Thanks for your very responsive solution!
