SMS - Microsoft Updates Tool Sync Issue

Asked by: Devon21

I'm getting errors in this advertisement. i also noticed it's not updating.

Error:
The program for advertisement "PSI20020" failed ("PSI0001D" - "Microsoft Updates Tool Sync"). The failure description was "11459".
 User context: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

Possible cause: The program generated an installation status Management Information Format (MIF) file with a status value of Failed.
Solution: For more information about the failure, refer to the documentation for the program you are distributing.

When I run this command in the command line, it returns with no errors and I noticed it updated.

syncxml.exe /s /unattend /site SMSSERVER /code PSI /package PSI0001D /target \\SMSSERVER\PackageSrc

This is the command in the Microsoft Updates Tool Sync Package.

Can you check on the wsussyncxml.log on the machine your are trying to sync and see if any errors are there?

Also, check on the version of ITMU you are using. Is it ITMUv3? I have seen problems with previous versions of ITMU unable to process the wsussn2.cab.

One more area to check might be the %systemroot%\windows\WindowsUpdate.log on the server.

This error may be with the .exe you are pushing from the SMS server. Is this an attended or unattended install?

If attended - Make sure the program is set to run in Normal mode

If unattended - Make sure the program is set to run in Hidden mode

Both options and more are available in the programs properties, then clicking the down arrow next to the box named Run:

Schriste,

This is the Windows Update package (ITMU) and the program is set to run in hidden mode.

Stirrin,

This is on the SMS server and I could not find the wsussyncxml.log. How do you find out what version of ITMU you are using?

The WindowsUpdate.log reported:

Sounds like a package issue and not a windows update one.

You may need to add security rights to the packages folder. I would start there and make sure the accounts that need it have the rights.

Have you been deploying packages in the past without any issue?

by: Devon21Posted on 2008-03-19 at 11:00:08ID: 21164031

Any other ideas...

i know it's not the package, it's a built-in package from Microsoft. All I'm trying to do, is to make sure SMS does the Microsoft Updates on a regular basis. For some reason it keeps failing, but it will update if I execute manually.

by: schristePosted on 2008-03-19 at 11:50:25ID: 21164517

Ok, what about your advertisement. Do you have that all set up? I don't use SMS for normal windows updates, I use a seperate WSUS server but I assume the security and MS updates through SMS make you create a package, using a wizard and that package will need an advertisement.

Let me know how you are setting up your packages and your advertisements and we can look there.

Do you have any errors in your Componet Status?

by: Devon21Posted on 2008-03-19 at 14:28:26ID: 21166077

Schriste,

Using a WSUS instead of SMS seems to be a common event. Why are you using WSUS instead of SMS?

Back to the question...

i have a package and a advertisement for Windows Updates (SMS generated), this is what's confusing me. I might just have to re-create them. Now if i re-create them, will it mess up anything else?

by: schristePosted on 2008-03-20 at 08:51:58ID: 21172758

I prefer to use WSUS for site patching and reporting. It's a preference thing, nothing more. Other sites prefer to use and do use SMS for patching. I like to keep them seperated, that's all.

It should not hurt anything by deleting and starting over. I assume you have been able to push patches before without issue? Did you have any errors in the Componets Status area? Any other errors or warnings showing that I'm not aware of?

by: Devon21Posted on 2008-03-24 at 10:37:10ID: 31429890

I'm just going to create a new one, I think something is wrong with the software. I'm noticing other issues.
