It's a tricky old game bacause you can actually do most of what them show you in MDT alone and not have the SCCM integration. Personally I prefer to have an MDT build that I can quickly provision/test and deploy via WDS and MDT, without SCCM involvement. Then when I'm happy then import my deployment task sequence into SCCM and hey presto. I find it easier to understand the processes too, not to mention a damn sight easier to describe to customers.

also, I would recommend the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, d/l from here:

Then look in there for the SCCM setup guide...this will teach you a lot about deploying and capturing OS's along with Drivers and editing Task Sequences
