Question

SCCM 2007 Server Share Distribution Point

Asked by: Chaudry

I m not able to copy a package to the Server share Distribution point

SCCM 2007 component status error has been changed to :

MS Distribution Manager failed to process package "Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2" (package ID = 00700020).

Possible cause: Distribution manager does not have access to either the package source directory or the distribution point.
Solution: Verify that distribution manager can access the package source directory/distribution point.

Possible cause: The package source directory contains files with long file names and the total length of the path exceeds the maximum length supported by the operating system.
Solution: Reduce the number of folders defined for the package, shorten the filename, or consider bundling the files using a compression utility.

Possible cause: There is not enough disk space available on the site server computer or the distribution point.
Solution: Verify that there is enough free disk space available on the site server computer and on the distribution point.

Possible cause: The package source directory contains files that might be in use by an active process.
Solution: Close any processes that maybe using files in the source directory.  If this failure persists, create an alternate copy of the source directory and update the package source to point to it.

I had a similar problem with SCCM, here is how I have everything set and it works now:

1.) I have the site server added to the domain admin security group. This gives the machine access to any resource it needs on the network.

2.) I have the server the share is residing on set as a site system but have no roles assigned to it.

3.) I have created the shares I want on the various file servers and specifically called out that the SCCM site server machine has full control rights to the share.

4.) The server share is setup as a protected distribution point (not needed for process to work though).

3.) When creating the packages in the field where it is asking to share the distribution folder I enter just the name I'd like the package folder to have. It isn't typed out as a UNC path though, ie. \\server\share\<package_name> I just have the <package_name> part in that field. This step does seem to run contrary to what I've read in some guides (at least from my understanding of the guides).

As I said these steps have have been tested they work and are in use now. Hopefully you can have just as much luck.
