Question

Cannot connect workgroup computer to SCOM. Event ID 20070

Asked by: ssiimmppllee

I keep receiving the following error when trying to join a workgroup computer . I have done this in the past with no issues. This particular install is not using a gateway.

the steps I have taken are:
1. install certificate chain on workstation
2. install Ops Cert on workstation
3. run manual install of SCOM agent
4. Run momcertimport util on workgroup

(certs are already installed on RMS and MS and working)

the workstation shows up under pending and I approve it. This tells me that I have proper communication from the workstation to the MS. But not the other way.

I can run "telnet msserver01 5723" with success
I cannot run the same telnet test from the MS to the workgroup

MS firewall is disabled.
my network team swears that there are no ACL's on the switches and that communication is wide open.

Could there be another reason that this is happening?

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      OpsMgr Connector
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      20070
Date:            8/19/2009
Time:            1:06:41 PM
User:            N/A
Computer:      workstation01
Description:
The OpsMgr Connector connected to msserver01.cnrl.com, but the connection was closed immediately after authentication occurred.  The most likely cause of this error is that the agent is not authorized to communicate with the server, or the server has not received configuration.  Check the event log on the server for the presence of 20000 events, indicating that agents which are not approved are attempting to connect.

Thanks Byty, I did have it set to auto approval for a full day. No luck.

Sory.. :( at me this worked.. recheck the certificate if it has the FQDN of the server..
Let`s hope someone will have the answer.. because i`m interested also..

That is interesting. I did not enter a FQDN for the server becasue it is a workgroup. We have done this for other servers with no issues.

I know that the certificate has to have the full name of the computer.. how you see it in properties..

by: wwwallyPosted on 2009-08-20 at 03:07:56ID: 25140711

Most times it's a misconfiguration certificate or approval in the SCOM server.
I should redo the steps to make sure you did not left something out.
Have a look at this guide for all steps and certificate settings.

Thanks Walter,

This was a cert issue.

For some reason my template CSP was defaulting to "Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider"

"Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider" is for Windows 2000 and XP
"Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider v1.0" is for Windows 2003

I am using Windows 2003
