Question

SCCM 2007 - Deploy software to single machine

Asked by: PDiBartolo

I have recently begun testing SCCM 2007 in a test environment.  Right now I have a SCCM server configured, extended the AD schema and added 4 client machines (segregated in a seperate OU).  I have everything working as expected.  Being new to the software I am finding it hard to mimic our current deployment setup.  Basically, we use Group Policy to deploy software.  I create a startup script and with the use of filtered security I place a machine account in a security group ask the client to reboot and voila it works.  We have deployed quite a bit of software this way.  So in SCCM I was successful at using the AD group in as a collection and then deploying the software out using that same collection.  But with active directory system discovery takes quite a bit of time before the computer shows up in the collection.

My question is; how frequent should active directory system discovery run and is there an easier way to deploy a software package out to one computer without having to create a separate collection for the computer record?  In our organization, someone asks for software (Acrobat pro) we place them in a group ask them to reboot and they get the software relatively quick with the help of a startup script.  I would like to do the same with SCCM.  Right now I have active directory system discovery running every hour.  Can I lower that to 15 minutes which would solve my problem?

Our local environment will consist of:
2 DC's 2003 AD level
40 servers 2003+
400 client machines XP SP3
All systems running within the same local office on 6 or so different subnets.  All gigabit.

Thanks
Phil

Hi Phil,

There is an easier way to deploy software packages out to a single computer. I'm at home, so bear with me on doing this from memory. First thing to do is go and download the SCCM Right-click tools, and install it on your SCCM server (and child sites if you have any) because this will help you so much as an SCCM administrator and give you the ability to do many tasks that you'd normally do manually. You can get it from here:

http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/rhouchins/archive/2008/04/09/sccm-right-click-tools.aspx

Scroll to the bottom of the page and there is the link to download it.

Once you do this, you'll be able go to your "All Systems" collection, right-click on the computer you want to deploy software to and click the "Distribute" > "Distribute Software" on the right-click menu or something along those lines. It should bring you to the Advertisement wizard that will allow you to create an advertisement to this single computer. I gotta check this out in the morning when I get to work, but try that out and let me know how that works for you.

As far as your collections not updating quickly enough, mine usually happens within 10 minutes if there is replication that needs to take place, but other than that it's fairly quick after clicking "Update Collection Membership", waiting for it to complete the update, then refreshing 2 times. Call me OCD about doing it that way, but it works for my enterprise environment of over 20,000+ clients :)

Like I said before, try this stuff out, and let me know how this helps you. I'll be happy to help you in anyway that I can when I get to work.

Oh and one more thing to add, Phil. I have my Active Directory System Discovery running every day at 10am. Any less, unless for testing purposes or a very small site is really unnecessary in my opinion. Although, since you only have less than 500 computers, you should actually be alright with your current setting at every hour. If you set this to any less, you may find that your current polling will end up stopping in the middle of it's task to start the new polling if it hasn't finished processing these changes/discoveries; this could mean that unprocessed data files could get stuck in a queue or pending state until you give it more time to process all data. I haven't had it happen to me yet, though the Microsoft rep I spoke with told me to keep it at everyday, so I haven't really tested it or questioned it.

If you want to speed up your polling times though, you make sure you set your "Include groups" checkbox to unchecked (excluded) instead of checked (included). The wording on this can get confusing, but make sure this is set to unchecked unless you are specifically looking for duplicate objects across multiple domains. This "Include groups" checkbox is unchecked by default.

I wouldn't lower AD discovery to 15 minutes, but there is no harm keeping at once an hour for an organisation of your size.

You will never get 'immediate' deployment, as the client will only poll for policy once an hour by default (this can be changed, but I wouldn't recommend it), or when the client starts up.  You can speed up the deployment in one of two ways.

(1)  Don't base deployment on AD Groups, instead use direct membership, that way you are not relying on a 1 hour poll of AD + up to 1 hour machine policy referesh from the client.  It's pretty easy to script a HTA or similar to add a machine to a collection.
(2) Continue to base on AD groups, but again you a script to pre-populate the AD group in the SCCM resource.  That way, if a computer is just added to an AD group, it will still get the software, but not until AD system group discovery and the the client's machine policy referesh, wheras if you 'pre-stage' the AD group in the record (at the same time as adding the machine to the AD group), then you will only be awaiting on the clients machine policy referesh (or when the client is restarted)

"You will never get 'immediate' deployment, as the client will only poll for policy once an hour by default (this can be changed, but I wouldn't recommend it), or when the client starts up."

You can speed up the deployment process by simply refreshing the machine policy via the SCCM Console or via Control Panel > Configuration Manager on the client side under "Actions". It will show up in an advertisement as soon as the package transfers from the DP to the client or however you have your package/program set up to deploy and run.

Sure .. but are you going to do that everytime you need to deploy software?  And are you going to give the SCCM console to every person who needs to deploy software?  Though I guess it could be the case for Phil, as he only has 400 odd comptuers to manage.

At my main customer, they use an in-house developed web-page to deploy software, which adds the computer resource directly to a collection, and connects to the remote computer and forces a Machine Policy Refresh .. that works really well, but it's a lot of work to set something like that up.

I just use Right-Click tools on a collection under "SiteName Actions" and it automatically sends a WMI call to each computer to perform the machine policy refresh. It's pretty automatic and helpful since I have 20,000+ enterprise clients (across many countries even) set up on 23 different servers to make up our SCCM architecture. I'm the only SCCM admin in the enterprise as well, so that capability is needed.

I know the tools you are talking about, the famous 'right click tools' :)   Just about every site I go to has them (or at least they do after I leave!).
