Question

SCCM Boot Images Corrupt?

Asked by: AVRD19

Our system was working fine up until recently.
I removed a DC, that really should not have affected anything, and now any time I try to add a driver to a boot image it fails, and gives unable to insert OSD Binaries into the mounted WIM file.  It doesn't matter which driver I use, they all fail.  I have also tried multiple boot images, to no avail.

I am using SCCM.

I tried mounting the wim, well, any wim that previously worked in windows AIK, I get There was an error generating a catalog file for image Microsoft Windows Vista PE (x86) in Windows image file.

Details: The location does not contain a valid Windows image or contain files that cannot be opened with read/write  privileges.  If (location of share) is a shared location, verify that you have read/write access to the location.

I checked out the folder, and the folder structure for \\server\sms_lab\OSD and its derivatives are read only, but the files contained in the read only folders are not read only......
I actually tried to unset the read only flag, but it keeps resetting itself back instantly.

What do u mean by you removed DC???? do you mean that your environment run without Domain Controller????

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-09-28 at 08:11:24ID: 25440005

No, we have 13 domain controllers, and 3 for head office and the main lab.
One of the older DC's was removed.

by: a-JaleelPosted on 2009-09-28 at 08:17:35ID: 25440056

Ok fine,
Try to reinstall AIK then try to update the Image.

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-09-28 at 08:23:33ID: 25440116

I actually did previously, and it still is not updating them properly.
I used the version that came on the CD.
It didn't work, so I downloaded a newer version, which also did not fix it, and now I am back at the version I was previously using, with still no luck.

additionaly you can check the following solution to know How to replace Windows AIK version 1.0 with Windows AIK version 1.1 when you use System Center Configuration Manager 2007:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950782/en-us

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-09-28 at 08:39:14ID: 25440260

When I follow that, I use a boot image that is clean, and has not been used for anything other than copying from, and it errors out.

At the end of the wizard, it tells me -
-----------------------------------------------------
   Error: Data Source Information
      Source location: \\Av-lab-sccm01\sms_lab\OSD\boot\i386\boot.wim
Boot Image: 1 - Microsoft Windows Vista PE (x86)

   Error: Package Information
      Name: Test Boot Image

   Error: Errors
The specified file can not be imported. Please make sure the file is not read only and you have read and write access to it.
-----------------------------------------------

I have double checked the folder, and the files are NOT read only, but the folders above it are, and I can't seem to change it.

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-09-28 at 08:40:54ID: 25440274

I will try the AIK upgrade now.

How is the Permission setting in sms_lab folder?

by: a-JaleelPosted on 2009-09-28 at 08:42:50ID: 25440287

OK Try AIK Upgrade and check sms_lab folder permission.

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-09-28 at 09:42:53ID: 25440857

Ok, so I uninstalled 1.0 and have installed toolkit 1.1.
I followed the steps laid out to convert the boot image.
It failed saying
----------------------------------------
   Error: Data Source Information
      Source location: \\av-lab-sccm01\test\boot.wim
Boot Image: 1 - Microsoft Windows Vista PE (x86)

   Error: Package Information
      Name: Test x86

   Error: Errors
The specified file can not be imported. Please make sure the file is not read only and you have read and write access to it.
-----------------------------------------

So, what I did at this point was I copied the boot.wim file to a new directory, one that I created and opened it wide up, no restrictions whatsoever on the folder.  I then ran the wmi stuff and tried importing it again and it failed again.

For some reason, and this may be something I hadn't known about server OS's, all folders are set as read only, but the files are not.  After looking up online, it seems that most programs ignore read only flag on a folder.

by: a-JaleelPosted on 2009-09-28 at 09:44:21ID: 25440874

try to give read/write then test it

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-09-28 at 09:51:17ID: 25440962

I have given the Everyone group full control over the new folder in an attempt to open it wide up.
I did that before running the wmi stuff, just to try it out, and it still failed.

Can you please do the following and try again:
1- Verify the user rights for your logon user account.
2- Use domain admin account.
3- check  ConfigMgr Security Rights permissions and check if ur account have the right permission.
4- go to AD and add SCCM account to  domain admins security group.

I think you have permission issue, plz try to remember what u had change in ur system before this issue occur.

Regards

also, ensure that the boot.wim file was in the correct location on the server...

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-09-28 at 12:46:52ID: 25442622

1) The logged on user is a domain administrator account.
 - the Network access account is a member of domain administrators
2) The account that I am using is the same account that was used previously, to successfully build Boot images before.  I have tried my personal admin account, the SMS administrator account and the domain admin account.
3) The administrator account as well as my personal account have full access to SCCM, which I just double checked.
4) The SMS administrator is a member of domain admins.

5) The location is where it was when it worked previously.  It is located in the osd/boot/x86 folder.
I moved one to a temp folder and tried to import it also, but it didn't work.

by: a-JaleelPosted on 2009-09-28 at 13:08:25ID: 25442805

it should be in the original location

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-09-28 at 13:09:32ID: 25442817

I tried in both.
I originally had it in the original location, and after failing a bunch, just today, I copied it to a test location to see if it would work there, but it still resided in its original folder.

with the following subject: SCCM Boot Images Corrupt

by: AVRD19Posted on 2009-10-08 at 13:23:14ID: 25529677

What this ended up being was the fact that I had renamed winpe.bmp to something else as a backup, and did not actually name a file back to that.
After I copied over the file and used it, I was able to create new boot images, but my old boot images were actually still corrupted, so I had to start fresh with boot image.
