Browse All TopicsThe firm I work for is currently using SMS 2003. We were starting to test the SCCM 2007 in a virtual test environment until a new project came on board for the firm forcing us to start using the MDT 2010 first. We just don't have the time to migrate SMS to SCCM and create the new build images before the deadline. We have two weeks to get the new Windows 7 64-bit machines out the door to the engineers. My question is, is it possible to migrate everything from MDT 2010 to SCCM 2007 when we get the time to upgrade to SCCM? By everything, I mean the Out-of-Box Drivers, Operating Systems, Packages, Task Sequences, and Applications.

The simple answer is no.
However, it is not too hard to migrate each of those components sepately.
The general over-simplified proccess is
(1) Configure "Config Mgr Integration" from MDT, this gives you some 'MDT' wizards and templates in Config Mgr
(2) Import your OS's and WIM images into Config Mgr
(3) Import your 'Out-of-box' drivers into SCCM .. this is pretty straight foward (and for Windows 7 you probably don't have any)
(4) Migrate your applications from MDT to Config Mgr, you already have the source and command lines for install, so this shouldn't be too bad. Make sure you check the program option to deploy in a TS without being advertised
(5) As for packages, I've never really used them so haven't needed to migrate them
(6) Use the Config Mgr console to "Create Microsoft Deployment Task Sequence", which will give you a base ConfigMgr MDT task sequence, and will create appropriate MDT related SCCM packages for you
(7) Modify the Custom Settings package with the values from your MDT deployment point (any lite-touch variables are ignored)
(8) Modify the Task Sequence created in step (6) to match your MDT task sequence
(9) Distribute your OS install /image packages, as well as all applications and MDT packages to appropriate distribution point(s)
(10) test :)
It can take awhile, but you've already done a lot of the hard work!
