The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Migrating user accounts to the domain

Tags: domain, user, migrate
Hello,

I have to setup client-server network with Windows 2000 Server and some Windows XP Pro workstations. Windows 2000 Server is in use at this moment just for simple folder share for all existing users without AD, but I have to setup it as domain controller / AD.

Is there any easy way how I can migrate all current user settings, including their Outlook accounts, My documents folders, desktop settings to newly created accounts? When they will join the domain using their new users, on their workstations they will get brand new "clean" accounts with anything inside, right? So how can I do it easier for about 20-30 workstation? Somebody mentioned something like "move user's profile to domain", but I don't know how to do it and what actually it will transfer. Other requirement is to use existing Linksys router with it DHCP server for this domain, not DHCP server in Windows. Is it a problem and what should I setup on the server in this case?

Thanks.

under system properties - advanced - user profiles - select your old account - copy to - c:\documents and settings\new account (domain account name)

It will copy everything across except PST files - you will need to do that manually

Make sure you reboot the machine first and log on as the administrator before copying profiles

DHCp should be run from the server and thats it! no router DHCP!

I need some clarification
If this is an existing 2000 server and you want to enable Active Directory start the wizard.the domain users will be ok. keep old netbios domain name.

If it is a new server 2000/2003 rebuild thats different.
The manual copy method stated by Jay is usually what I would do but its not very smooth and you often need that veteran touch, there is the login as admin to do this and log in as user to do that. It gets the job done though.

The XP migration tool works well, If you can visit each workstation.
DHCP on the 2003 server, important little, network runs correct fact.

2 Jay Jay70:

Yes, I know how to copy user files from "Documents and settings" folder, but if they are multiple accounts on this computer by 20 workstations it will take long time.... I was thinking for something like backup, maybe XP migration tool is good, never tried it before.

I need to keep DHCP server running on Linksys, not on the server. I think, I red some information in Internet before that it is not a problem to use different "hardware" DHCP server instead of built-in in Windows Server, but I should channge something in W2K Server settings.

2 akourafas:

Yes, it is existing W2K Server, which is part of workgroup right now and it is with one shared folder for all users inside this workgroup. My boss asked me to install AD to make their life easier, I have to install two network printers and make sure that our 3 new user groups (say, sales, accounting and management) will have access to different folders. Yes, I can visit each vorkstation, so I'll try XP migration tool. I can't understand your answer "DHCP on the 2003 server, important little, network runs correct fact.", can you explain, please?

Right now the network is with T1 line with 20 public IPs throught Siemens gateway, and Linksys router with running DHCP server is connected to it. We have another server which is running special application/database (vendor provides all the support for it) and maybe for this reason they don't want to touch current DHCP server. I have to setup the server to use external DHCP, so what should I set to do it?

Adding AD to an existing 2000 server ill retain all existing domain members. No re-join.
On 2000 server install all latest service packs etc.
If during work hours we need to talk about that share everyones connected to.
On 2000 server run AD Wizard, primary AD, backward compatability, netbios network name = same,
During wizard select yes to setup DNS/WINS no to DHCP. I might even install DHCP and not create an address pool and not activate the DHCP server.
Make a batch file(s) for the network shares, copy it to sysvol/login
Create your groups, add users, your batch file or better script will determine group membership and map drives accordingly.
Create and share the network printers from the server, mapping them with the login script can be done
You wont need to do anything to the 2000 server telling it about about other DHCP servers.
Check the DHCP settings on linksys, does the first DNS server listed point to your internal 2000 ad server? If not XP can take a long time to boot up trying to register with remote dns.
Specify the DNS forwarders on the 2000 servers DNS /properties tab.
There's more to do :-)

If new domain / visiting each machine for migration
Get all user passwords or tell everyone that passwords will change the next login.
Login as local or domain admin to the users machine, add domain\user to local admin goup (temporary)
Logout admin login as user, run migration wizard, save data to LOCAL drive
Logout user login admin, join new domain, reboot login as admin again.
Logout admin login as user, run migration import. reboot.
login user, visit domain sysvol, double click batch file for drive maps and right click connect to printer shares.
Accepted Solution

Oh, outlook related, specifically,if the mailboxes are large and new profiles are used it is easier after joining domain, after migration wizard, login as admin and copy old PST file manually, They are under app data/ ms / outlook.

tips: the docs folders are hidden, use tools options to see
the doc folders are secure, copying the PST can be a challange if you are logged in as the new domain user and they dont have the rights to see thier old profile folders.

Thanks, akourafas. We are almost done :-) .

Althrough I did some W2k3 setups in the past, they were SMB verison with some automated scripts so it was painless. Now I have to deal with old w2k and different setup and that why I need details and some info. Your suggestion was close to my initial idea, but you gave me more details and now I got more details.

Finally, what actually mean "your batch file or better script will determine group membership and map drives accordingly" (what batch file or script?)

and

"Specify the DNS forwarders on the 2000 servers DNS /properties tab"? What should I specify? IP addresses to point where?

Thanks

Script link althouh batch files will work
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/resources/qanda/dec04/hey1210.mspx
The printers get tougher to map and configure the script so I often map the printers manually while at the station unless the printers change a lot then I take the time to impliment a script for printers.
Under group properties you could specify a script for that group as apposed to the script figuring out what group your in but thats another gotcha because some users are in both groups..

On the linksys dhcp point it to the new 2000 servers ip.
On the linksys dhcp point the second dhcp dns setting to 4.2.2.2
On the 2000 server open DNS admin,  right c lick the server name, 2nd tab or close is forwarders, enable, add a servers ip the window, can use 4.2.2.2 or your ISPs dns servers are better.

With this setup  when client turn on they get DHCP from linksys, and it points them to resove names via the internal server, IF the internal server doenst have the answer it will forward the request to the outside dns server. Also on monitoring tab you can clcik test.

another quich test, open dos promt, type nslookup:
what server did it go to? Pay attention.
"set server new2000serversip"
"www.google.com" (did you get a response?) then win2k forwarder is working.
