Multiple users' Windows XP profiles do not load after logon

Randomly, different users logon to our network and their wallpaper appears without any desktop icons.  The work around has been to hit ctrl-alt-del, log off and then log on again which always works.

I have about 40 users in a single Windows 2000 Server Active Directory.  All users have Windows XP Pro SP2 images on various hardware platforms (IBM, Dell, Micron (MPC).  I am running a Group Policy based logon script which executes many batch file style line items and finally calls a Kix script which maps drives and pops up a logon welcome message.

Any help will be appreciated.
