Script to find the folder path of an AD group

Hi,
I have a list of all my AD groups and i want to know if any of them are now redundant, ie. there is a group with members, however this group doesnt actually apply to any folder on my servers, so its totally pointless and cant be deleted?

Would be nice to run this as some kind of VB Script to excel, if possible

The easiest way to get the list is to do it with cmd-scripting. dsquery/dsget is part of adminpak.msi available on server-OS.
Run the following sample in the command prompt to get a two-lined list with DN and number of members.

If you prefer to get the user-friendly name of the group, replace the "echo %a" with "dsget group %a -samid"
If you want to save the output data to file, you can change the 'echo %a' to 'echo %a >> output.txt' and 'find /C "CN="' to "find /C "CN=" >> output.txt'
If you want to save the script as file (*.cmd), you nead to replace the %a with %%a.

hi
thanks for the reply
im used to vb and never done cmd stuff before, so might be a little slow, sorry!

if i run the above command, how would i get it to excel sheet, also we have like 21 windows servers, so will this run across them all and take a really long time?

is there any way i can just do a sample check of how this would look, on just c:\my documents folder, for example?

I understood it as you searched for groups with members.
The command in my previous sample will only list the group and how many members it contains.

To check if the group is used for access on shared folders, you nead to customize it to also loop through the shares.
As a combination of the both loops, you can copy the code-snippet below into a cmd-file. You will nead a file shares.txt including a line per share to check.
The sample below does not support spaces in group-names, because the dsget prefixes the lines with spaces.

The output will be something like:

-Number of members:
3
-Number of shares:
1
1:
2:
3:
4:
5:
6:
7:
8:
9:
10:
11:

for /F %%g in ('dsquery group^|dsget group -samid') do (

Sorry, a minor typo. The sample will write 0 or 1 for number of shares if it is has access.
Add a echo. %%f to also display the share name
