The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Renamed user leaves old details in outlook alias

Tags: alias, outlook, user, exchange, old
I renamed a user called Bigbird in AD to Bert.  I have changed account details and Exchange details in AD including the X.400

When you type Bert in Outlook, it shows Bert <Bigbird>.  Also, when I look in System Manager under Mailboxes it shows last logon as domain\Bigbird not domain\Bert.

An easy one no doubt but help would be appreciated...

Forgive my ignorance.  I found this article already however; it doesnt say how to remove it.  The Exchange alias has already been changed to the new name (Bert) but still shows old user.

I have noticed that when you open the GAL and look at this user, when you scroll across to email address, it says /o=company/ou=First Administrative Group/cn=Recipients/cn=Bigbird which is the old user.  Do I have to generate a new Offline Address Book?  If so, how do I do this?

You can hack the legacydn attribute, but you are better off just copying the account with the correct name.

is your outlook running in cached mode?

What would it matter?  The account has been stamped.  You can change the alias all you like, it won't make a difference.

i asked that because RobWasho mentioned that he is not able to see the correct email details in outlook

Outlook is running in cached mode yes.  Can I ask why the rename does not work fully?  Surely it shouldnt be necessary to copy the account.  If so, it would be easier just to create a new user in future...

Thanks

The article above is mine.

I never recommend renaming accounts, except for married women. They seem to have no problem with their old naming showing. However divorced women do, so they get a new account.
If this is a new user who has taken over someone's job then I don't think it is fair on them having all of the old junk in their mailbox when they have started.

If you change the alias value (the bit in the < >) you basically have a new account. No one internally will be able to reply to email that user account sent before the change, nickname files will be invalid and the account may not work correctly for everyone for up to 48 hours while cached mode updates.

Thanks Simon for clarifying.  Good clear article.

FYI - It was a new user that was created then did not turn up.  The account was then renamed for the replacement.  Lesson learned.

When you say about changing the alias <xxx> where do you mean to do this?  legacydn attribute?  Is there any way to force update for cached mode?  Why does it take for up to 48 hours out of interest?

It can take up to 48 hours due to the way that Exchange and Outlook handle cached mode. You cannot speed it up.

Cached mode uses the Offline Address Book (OAB). The OAB is generated once a day by default. That can be changed - I usually run it three times a day.
However Outlook in cached mode only downloads an updated OAB automatically when it is started or every 24 hours, which ever occurs first. That behaviour cannot be changed. The most you can do is ask the users to download manually.
By a combination of bad timing on account creation, OAB generation and Outlook being started, it can be 48 hours before a change is seen.

Normally you can change the entry in ADUC on the Exchange General tab. That is labelled Alias. If that entry has been changed, this is a modification in adsiedit.msc.

Thanks Simon.  Very helpful as always.  I had updated using adsiedit so will wait for this to update.

running asdiedit.msc and navigating to the user in question, and editing the legacydn attribute resolved the issue for me.

That is unsupported and, IMHO, dangerous

11.01.2007 at 12:58PM PDT, ID: 20196166
What's dangerous about it? Force a rebuild of the GAL, redownload the address book, issue resolved. Jeez. Don't be so afraid to use active directory tools, that's why they are there.

>>Don't be so afraid to use active directory tools, that's why they are there

So you can perform unsupported operations?  Guess again.

You also technically have the tools to dcpromo an exchange server, that doesn't make it a good idea.

The doubt and fear that I am expressing at your solution are not posted because I am ignorant to it - they are posted because I have seen it done, with bad results.  A great deal of my work is to come into heavily unsupported networks and get them back to a reasonable state.

If you want to do that on your own production networks, feel free - to be honest, I have done it myself before.  BUT, it is NOT something that should be recommended to the general public - far too many people will assume that it is good advice (which it isn't, even if it may work some of the time) and just do it.

We have a responsibility to give the best answers - not just possible answers.  The best way to solve this problem is to recreate the account.  Yes, it takes a few minutes more, but it is supported, and causes absolutely no problems at all.

Hope you understand what I am driving at here.
