The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

All clients should sync with the DC (PDC emulator) automatically - so all you need to do is sync this machine with an external time provider.

You need to make sure that port 123(UDP) is open and then you can issue the command

net time /setsntp:"time.windows.com"    (or another time sever)

you can check that it worked with

net time /querysntp

for a list of time servers see http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Servers/NTPPoolServers

This is from Microsoft Technet. Hope this will help you:

To synchronize the domain controller with an external time source
1.
Click Start, and then click Command Prompt.
 2.
In the Command Prompt window, type the following line, where peers is a comma-separated list of IP addresses of the appropriate time sources, and press ENTER:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist: peers /syncfromflags:MANUAL

The time sources you choose depend on your time zone. For example, if your domain controller is located in the Pacific Time zone, this line might read:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:131.107.1.10 /syncfromflags:MANUAL

In this example, the IP address of the timeserver is used instead of the fully qualified domain name for security purposes.

3.
Press ENTER. You should get a message that the command completed successfully.

4.
 Type w32tm /config /update

5.
Press ENTER. You should get a message that the command completed successfully.

W32time uses a variable poll interval based on the quality of timesync with the server. On DCs, this interval defaults to between 64 and 1024 seconds.

6.
To immediately synchronize with the external time server, type w32tm /resync and press ENTER. You should get a message that the command completed successfully.

7.
 Type Exit and press ENTER.

Hello compdigit44,

Are you running your domain controller as virtual server (on e.g. ESX). If yes, it will by default sync with the host OS. You can make sure that host OS has correct time of you can prevent synchronization of guest OS with host OS.

Regards,

Mike

Hi,

If you are behind firewall you might need to open UDP port 123 for synchronization with outside world to work.

Can you restart Windows Time service and then go to Event Logs. Look into System logs and find any w32tm events. What do they say?

Do the AD servers sync time with the DC with the PDC emulator role or doesn't it matter?

All domain controllers sync with PDC emulator by default.

All clients will sync with one of the domain controllers in domain.
