The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How to manually recreate (or copy?) _msdcs.company.local

Tags: Microsoft, Server, 2003, DNS question
I'm doing a swing installation of SBS 2003, but my problem is one of DNS.  Somehow on my migration/temporary server I've "lost" some DNS information.  My root _msdcs.company.local seems to be intact, but on close inspection of my company.local I see that the _msdcs container doesn't exist, nor does the NS record below it.

Error being generated when trying to add member to domain:

DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain company.local:
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.company.local
The following domain controllers were identified by the query:
tempdc.company.local
Common causes of this error include:
- Host (A) records that map the name of the domain controller to its IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses.
- Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running.

Try restarting the Netlogon service on the DC.  This should re-register the SRV records.

Thanks, but that didn't recreate what I'm missing.

is there some way to add it edit the netlogon.dns to fix this?  Anyone know the specific steps, I'm running out of time, thanks!

It's easy.  Just browse to your forward lookup zones.  Right click and specify new primary zone.  Check the box to make it AD Integrated.

Then name it:

_msdcs.company.local

You might have to restart the netlogon service after creating the zone to registern the records.

I'm not missing a zone I think, I'm missing the container in the zone called _msdcs underneath the company.local zone, and then the record inside of it.  I can see it on my original production doman, just not in my migration.

Options on right click are relload, new host, new mail exchanger, new doman, new delegation, other new records... is that a delegation??  The icon next to it is a folder with a piece of paper, like that of a zone...

_msdcs can be in two places.

The default location for 2003 is for it to be outside like I was telling you.
The default location for 2000 is underneath the forward lookup zone for your domain.

You would select new domain if you are creating it under the existing zone.  You are not delegating it to another server.

I would try my original set of instructions and see if the srv records appear there first.  Like I said,  by default in 2003 the _msdcs zone appears directly under "Forward Lookup Zone" right on top of your domain name's zone.

I'm sorry, maybe this is SBS2003 specific? Let me try again... I'm getting this error when joining to a domain:
START ERROR:
DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain company.local:
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.company.local
The following domain controllers were identified by the query:
tempdc.company.local
Common causes of this error include:
- Host (A) records that map the name of the domain controller to its IP addresses are missing or contain incorrect addresses.
- Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected to the network or are not running.
STOP ERROR

SRV records exist in _ldap_tcp.dc._msdcs.company.local, and they look correct.  In fact the only thing other than the server name/identifer that differs from my production server is another record under the forward lookup zone company.local also called _msdcs with an NS record underneath that.  May this isn't pertinent and I'm clouding the issue.

Thanks,

Trish

I've found my solution... seems when you do an SBS migration, firewall must be off on the migration dc... turning it off, then adding the production domain reenables it, and dcpromo/gc doesn't take, which results in the above as well as netlogon and sysvol shares not beiing created.  No warning message is given, you are told dcpromo succeeded and gc is advertising, but in reality its not complete.  Thank you sbsmigration.com for all the help.
