The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

WSUS Self-Update is not working!

Tags: Microsoft, WSUS, 3.0
Hi All,

I have a Win2003 server running WSUS 3.0.  I have scoured the experts-exchange forum with no luck.  I checked the following which I thought would help but didn't ( http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/Windows_2003_Active_Directory/Q_23038142.html#a20585774 ).  I have a network that is running CA 8.1, as well as a Sonar firwall system.  Ever since WSUS 3.0 was installed, updates have not reached the client.  When I open the WSUS console, I cannot see an clients under the Computers Tab.  How do I get the computers to appear in the Computer Tab???  Any help woudl be appreciated.

Regards,
dbasseal

First off, let's get a feel for how it was set up. About 90% of all WSUS problems are a result of some simple thing, overlooked.

Top 90% of all WSUS problems:
What port do you have WSUS on? Port 80 (default) or port 8530 an alternative port?
What software firewalls do you have on the servers and clients, if any at all? (Example: ISA)
You didn't set up your GPO on the COMPUTERS group in active directory, did you?
Did you upgrade to Netframework 2.0 or later and MMC console 3.0?
Have you synchronized your server with another server and have updates waiting for the clients?

____________________________________________________________________
Some other issues With WSUS:
Do you use a Web proxy for WSUS?
Did you reindex the database? try a DBCC CHECKDB to ensure that the WSUS database is correctly indexed (Information is located at: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=86948)
Do you have imaged or cloned clients?

All of the above, well nearly.  To answer
1. I'm using Port 5830
2. Running CA 8.1 on all machines
3. I set my GPO on the root in AD so that it propogates to all clients
4. NetFramework 2.0 i sinstalled aswell as MMC 3.0.
5. I haven't synchronised the server with any others.
6. The servers bypass the proxy
7. I haven't reindexed the database
8. I do have imaged clients.

Since I posted, I have been able to get alot of clients to contact the WSUS and are now installing updates.  I checked al the above and made a few modifications to IIS, like re-entering the IUSR_<SERVERNAME> creditionals for the WSUS site.  Since your suggestions were on the money, I have awarded you the points.

Just a following up:

Reindexing the database can be done about once a month for preventative maintenance.

Also here is a blurb on how imaged clients may act funny with WSUS. But, it sounds like you have this under control since you are able to join and function in the domain. You probably run Sysprep and get a new SID.
