The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Setting up trust between 2 domains

Tags: Microsoft, Windows, 2003, Trust
Hi all,

I'm almost getting suicidal here :). We're trying to setup a 2 way trust between our domain and a secondary domain in another office. We connect the 2 offices with an IPSec tunnel between 2 firewalls. On both sides we do a NAT translation to public IP addresses for our DC's.
I believe we have all the necessary ports open (correct me if I'm wrong):
RPC endpoint mapper      135/tcp, 135/udp
RPC static port for Active Directory replication      49512/tcp
Kerberos      88/tcp, 88/udp
LDAP      389/tcp
LDAP over SSL      636/tcp
Global Catalog LDAP      3268/tcp
Global Catalog LDAP over SSL      3269/tcp
SMB over IP (Microsoft-DS)      445/tcp, 445/udp
DNS      53/tcp, 53/udp
Network Time Protocol (NTP)      123/udp
NetBIOS name service      137/tcp, 137/udp
NetBIOS datagram service      138/udp
NetBIOS session service      139/tcp

When I try to setup the trust on DomainA, the Trust is created but I get this error message:

The verification of the incoming trust failed with the following error(s):
The trust password verification test was inconclusive.
A secure channel reset will be attempted.
The secure channel reset failed with error 1311: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
The outgoing trust has been verified. It is in place and active.

On DomainA I can get a list of the user in DomainB, but if I do the same in DomainB, I get this error message: The system detected a possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you.

If I try to setup the 2way trust from DomainB I receive this error message:
The new trust wizard cannot continue because the specified domain cannot be contacted

On both DNS's I've added forwarders for the other domain to the correct IP address (nslookups work), our firewalls do the DNS translation, so if DomainA queries an IP address of DomainB, the external address is returned.

What am I doing wrong?

Did you 1st try opening IP to IP to make sure it is working before closing off the ports?

02.27.2008 at 02:29AM PST, ID: 20992809
That's the KB article I took the ports from. I don't control one of the firewalls.
You think it's a FW issue? I can ask the other side to do some extra monitoring.

02.27.2008 at 02:58AM PST, ID: 20992969
Could be. Usually it is best to confirm things work before placing any barriers; that way you will no for sure if it has to do with the ports or not.

Do you have stateful connections opened? (how about UDP replies?)

Download portqryUI from microsoft, they have a built in domain tester which will allow you to check that th required ports are open.

Opening up port UDP 389 fixed the problem (his port isn't mentioned in the article of MS)!

Thanks!!!
