The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Getting "There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper" when trying to join a Win 2003 server to a domain.

Tags: There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.
I'm trying to join a Windows Server 2003 SP2 box to our domain and when attempting to do so on the client server I am getting an error window with the title of "Computer Name Changes" with the text in the body of the window "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "domain.local":" There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper" Where domain.local is represents our domain name. This message appears about 20-30 seconds after I try to join the domain. This is the only box where the problem is occurring.

Nothing is logged into the event viewer on the client machine during this process. However on the domain controller I can see my account accessing Active Directory several times in the security log. This has not helped me. The computer account gets locked out during this process. Here's one security entry (note I've changed the domain name, my account and server names to generic placeholders)

Event Type:      Success Audit
Event Source:      Security
Event Category:      Account Management
Event ID:      646
Date:            3/18/2008
Time:            10:55:50 AM
User:            DOMAIN\myaccount
Computer:      DOMAINCONTROLLERNAME
Description:
Computer Account Changed:

       Target Account Name:      SERVERNAME
       Target Domain:      DOMAIN
       Target Account ID:      DOMAIN\SERVERNAME
       Caller User Name:      myaccount
       Caller Domain:      DOMAIN
       Caller Logon ID:      (0x0,0x92E7A10)
       Privileges:      -
 Changed Attributes:
       Sam Account Name:      -
       Display Name:      -
       User Principal Name:      -
       Home Directory:      -
       Home Drive:      -
       Script Path:      -
       Profile Path:      -
       User Workstations:      -
       Password Last Set:      -
       Account Expires:      -
       Primary Group ID:      -
       AllowedToDelegateTo:      -
       Old UAC Value:      0x80
       New UAC Value:      0x81
       User Account Control:
            Account Disabled
       User Parameters:      -
       Sid History:      -
       Logon Hours:      -
       DNS Host Name:      -
       Service Principal Names:      -

I've played with the permissions on the client server's RPC services to no success. I've checked and rechecked DNS. I can authenticate to the domain as I can access shares on it. I can see the domain. The domain controller registers this client servers name in the security event log and the IP address.

I'm hitting a wall here. I've been hitting MS, EE and google for a few days and not finding anyone with the same exact problem just similar issues. No firewall on this box btw.

First thing I'd try would be to delete the computer account and let AD auto-create it during domain join.

2nd thing I'd try would be to fire up NetMon and watch the traffic during the domain join to confirm that there's no filtering happening on the server side.

I have deleted the AD account, re-created it, allowed AD to create it, and even changed the name of the server and did all of the above again to no success. Same exact results every time. Double checking with my network boys on this but I am pretty sure we've done that before.

Laura, thanks for the direction. I've checked with my network team and sure enough we're blocking tcp high ports along the way. I believe 1025 is one that is needed for RPC. We have a change for the weekend that will address this and I'll see if that indeed resolves the issue.

I'll respond here with the results.

Thanks for the link, Bill. That's one I've been to before and did not find the solution. I'm hoping the firewall rule change will address this issue. If it does then port 1025 is needed or some high port. I'll be able to post specifics after this weekend.

If you haven't changed the RPC port allocation on the servers, you will need to open all high ports (1024-65534/tcp). See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908472.

I support CoccoBill's suggestion. All ports need to be open between the client and the Domain controller with which the client is supposed to authenticate (based on the subnet specifications in AD Sites).

I'll be changing the port allocation for the service on Monday after the firewall change. I'm hopeful this will resolve the issue. Will bounce back either way on Monday.
