The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Change built-in password on all domain computers
Tags: Microsoft, Windows, XP, built in password change
We had an employee leave recently that had access to the built-in admin acount for all workstations on site (they're all the same).  We would like to change the password on all computers in the fastest way.

Is there a way to do this with group policy, a script, batch file, etc.

We have an SMS server, if a script needs to be pushed that way.  We also have Dameware if that can be used.

Quickest way is probably cusrmgr.exe from the 2000 Resource Kit: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272530

05.09.2008 at 07:06AM PDT, ID: 21532928
Thanks for you quick response.

Is there a quick way to gather all the computer names to input into this command?  Maybe a dsquery or dsget?

Rank: Sage

dsquery computer -o rdn -limit 0 will spit out the short name of every machine in your domain; if you know they're all in a particular OU, you can add the DN of the OU between "computer" and "-o rdn" to limit the scope of the query.

can this then be piped | into the cusrmgr.exe command?  I'm looking for a way to no type all the hundreds of computer names.

Also Microsoft says this applies to win 2000 and nt, will it work for xp?  server 2003?

Works on XP as far as I know, never tried it with 2K3.

I'd put all the machine names in a file, one per line, and use psexec with the @c:\filename.txt parm to automatically hit every machine in the file.

cusrmgr.exe is hard to get.  I found that with the pstools kit there is a pspasswd.exe.  Is this a similar program?  Can I use this instead?

05.12.2008 at 05:37AM PDT, ID: 21546293

Rank: Sage

Yep, very similar functionality, will plug right in with psexec as I listed above.  (I've kept cusrmgr around for years, so didn't realize that it wasn't very downloadable anymore.  Good to know for future reference.)

Could you help me with my syntax?  The text file has 3 computers with their distinguished names.  -u is my domain admin account.  Username is the local admin account I'm changing.  NewPassword is the new password I want.  It looks like this.

C:\>pspasswd @testbatch.txt -u first.lastname Username administrator NewPassword C1everNewP@ssword

pspasswd @computers.txt -u domain\MyDomainAdminAccount Administrator NewPassword

You'll be prompted for your DA creds before the command will launch

05.16.2008 at 08:28AM PDT, ID: 21583611
Sorry for my delay...

I typed in:
pspasswd @testbatch.txt -u domain\MyDomainAdminAccount Username Administrator NewPassword 11@@etc.etc.

According to the help file if I don't supply my password it should prompt for one.  It doesnt prompt me, nor does it give an error code.  It just displays the help file again,  What am I missing?

Remove the words "Username" and "NewPassword" from your command string.
