ACL not being inherited
Tags: Microsoft, Server, 2003
I set permissions for the "Domain Admins" group in a  parent folder, but for some reason the permissions are not being propagated or inherited by the child folders properly.

Here is the folder path that I am having a problem with

E:\files\folder 1\folder 2

"Files" folder permission entries:
Domain admins group has full control and set to apply to This folder, subfolders, and files.
Domain admins group is also set to apply these permission to objects

"Folder 1" permission entries
Set to allow inheritable permissions
Domain admins group has full control, BUUT it is only set to apply to this folder only....it shows that it is being inherited from E:\files\, but the ACL is not being inherited properly

"Folder 2" permission entries
Set to allow inheritable permissions
Domain admins group is not displayed at all

I have tried replacing permissions on all child objects from the "files" folder, but that hasn't worked.  Please help!!

what happens if you untick inherit, copy permissions and then retick inherit?
or create another folder at the same level?

05.09.2008 at 11:35PM PDT, ID: 21538040
Tried that already, on folder 1, but it still keeps copying the permission incorrectly.

I created a folder on the same level as folder 1, called folder a, and the new folder is also exhibiting the same problem.

05.10.2008 at 04:29AM PDT, ID: 21538543
Have you tried taking ownership of the files before resetting the permissions on all child objects?

05.10.2008 at 07:00AM PDT, ID: 21539078
Oh yeah, it was one of the first things I did.

05.10.2008 at 07:27AM PDT, ID: 21539143
is this locally on the client or is it a network share?

05.10.2008 at 09:51AM PDT, ID: 21539620
can this be taken offline at all?
maybe if you run check disk over it while it is offline.

05.10.2008 at 10:05AM PDT, ID: 21539662
I am doing this locally on a Windows 2003 Server, trying to get the permissions set up properly so I can share it on the network.

05.12.2008 at 05:09AM PDT, ID: 21546136
can you copy the data to another location and set the permissions on there?

05.12.2008 at 12:18PM PDT, ID: 21549721
I just tried that and that didn't work either.  Would you guys like for me to a record my screen so you can see what I am doing and maybe correct my mistakes?

05.13.2008 at 11:28AM PDT, ID: 21557854
I think I fixed my own problem.  For some reason I have to add the security group to the folder using the simple permissions view.  For some reason when I add it using the advanced view it doesn't work properly.  Anyone know why that is?

05.13.2008 at 05:21PM PDT, ID: 21560345
Here are some videos for you guys

Here is when I add the permission using the simple view, everything works fine
http://dev.orbitmicro.com/videos/permission%20using%20simple%20view/

Here is a video of when I add the permission using the advanced view, notice how the permission does not inherit properly

Are you running sp2 or later?
thats strange, it worked fine on my xp box here at home...tested at work and it worked
flawlessly.

05.14.2008 at 09:43AM PDT, ID: 21566106
I figured it out, I was checking the box at the bottom of the permission edit/create box which is marked "Apply these permisions to objects and/or containers within this container only." That option will cause the permissions to only apply to files and folders one level below the root folder which you are declaring the permissions on, they won't be inherited any deeper. This is why the permissions apply to "This folder only" on a subfolder - that is due to that checkbox being checked.
