I had already found that article, but I'm not really sure what to do with it. The computer is between operating systems now. If it's a missing device driver how do I supply the driver. I did make a driver disk from the windows vista home premium installation before I started the windows home premium installation. I also have a restore cd for the vista home premium installation.

Okay, at what point does it stop? Can you delete the original partition and recreate it during the setup?

Have you checked the bios to see if the hard disk is being recognised?

by: ccuretonPosted on 2008-12-20 at 12:32:41ID: 23219531

It originally started mid to end of windows home server installation. Now it happens when I try to restart the computer with either the windows home server installation cd or with the Factory Restore CD for Vista Home Premium.

I can't get into the bios because the keys to press for the bios does not show up on the screen ... neither F2 or F10 works, but I don't really know what key this system wants.

by: QuintainTPosted on 2008-12-20 at 12:44:11ID: 23219560

Try pressing the delete key on boot up.(It's usually F2 or Delete)

Does the install give you the option to go into the repair console? If so go in and run Fixboot.

by: ccuretonPosted on 2008-12-20 at 12:54:00ID: 23219596

Delete nor F2 gets into the bios.

F2 leads to Automated Repair, but the next step asks for Windows Automated System Recovery Disk to be inserted into the floppy drive.

The only thing I have are DVD's... Factory Restore and Drivers & Apps or the Windows Home Server Installation CD.

It looks like you need CTRL-ALT-ESC to get in the bios on Acer machines.

Can you get the install to start and get as far as asking if you want to install a fresh copy of windows or repair and existing one? If so choose repair, log in to the existing setup and run Fixboot. This is a long shot and I expect you won't get this far.

Can't get into bios... boots straight in to Windows Setup. Setup is Starting Windows. BSOD.

by: QuintainTPosted on 2008-12-20 at 13:36:27ID: 23219760

It sounds like the machine has got part way through the setup correctly. Now it's set the secod part of the setup. This causes the setup to jump straight into the second part without allowing you to break in.

You can either pound the Esc and F8 keys like a maniac as the machine boots up. You may get in. Alternately can you put the setup cd/dvd in it's drive and then see if you can restart the setup. If it lets you do this make sure you delete the existing system partition and recreate it.

If none of this works you may need to remove the hard disk and either put in in another machine as a slave or put it in a hard disk caddy. Then format the thing and start again.

I've had a number of problems with WHS setup, especially when using systems with a RAID setup.

This is what I had to do, so I hope this is helpfull.

What I found was:

Setup Part 1 is in a Vista PE. It does the setup & partitioning of the hard drive, copies all the setup files for windows 2003 to the hard drive then reboots.

Setup Part 2 is the windows 2003 SBS setup. This is gernally the part where it fails when loading drivers to access the hard drive. Despite trying every revision of the drivers and pressing F6 I still got the same problem.

What I had to do to fix this was:

Locate the Server 2003 setup files on the WHS DVD and copy them to the hard drive.
Use nLite to slipstream the hardware drivers for the chipset/raid controlers into the 2003 setup.
Recreate the file structure of the origional DVD and burn back the modified content. I dont know how to make the DVD bootable with the origional content.

I then booted from the origional DVD and when it got to the point of configering the hard drive, swaped the DVD to my modified disc.

Let the setup complete. When the 2003 Server part of the setup starts there should be no need to Press F6 to load the drivers.

I had this exact same problem while trying to install Window Home Server on a Dell Dimension 9100.

I changed the BIOS settings and fixed the problem.  The "SATA Operation" setting  under "Drives" in the BIOS was set for "Autodetect / AHCI". I changed it to "Autodetect / ATA" and Voila!  WORKS!

No additional drivers needed.

xizor,

I used nLite to slipstream the CERC SATA1.5/6 drivers into the SVR2003 folder and burned a DVD with the new SVR2003 folder.  When the "Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server Setup" screen complains, I insert this new DVD and press ENTER to Retry.  The installation still cannot find the cercsr6.sys file.

The SVR2003 folder is located in the root of the WHS Server installation disc, so I didn't create the other files or folders on the modified DVD.  What am I missing?

GENIUS!! If I could give you points I would. Was having this exact problem on my Dell OptiPlex 755, changed the SATA Operations like you said. Booted up and continued installing like a charm.

Guess this a Dell Raid / SATA issue so if you own a Dell and this is the problem, try VisionVoices solution!
