ShadowProtect IT is designed just for copying an OS disk - and we do that all the time. I was surprised that it didn't work with WHS however.

Browse All TopicsIs there a way to replace the boot drive on a Windows Home Server that doesn't require doing a reinstall of WHS? I have a functional WHS but the boot drive is small, I want to replace it with a larger one but everything I've read indicates that the only way to do it is to use the reinstall - which reloads the OS from scratch. I tried imaging the drive with ShadowProtect IT, but when I brought up the new drive WHS had all kinds of problems for example it couldn't figure out how much free space there was and .NET was throwing off errors constantly. I need a clean way to upgrade the boot drive so I can do that for a client.

Yeah, it sounds like a great program. I have always just rebuilt operating systems and handled personal data recovery...I wonder why it wouldn't work then as it seems to tote itself as a great solution for exactly what you are trying to do with it.
You may benefit from switching this out of Windows Home Server and placing this comment in the Disaster And Recovery thread, as this is more about ShadowProtect IT than Windows Home Server I think.

This isn't the answer you are hoping for but you are going to have to reinstall. In my experience you NEVER try to "copy" an operating system, it is just problematic and highly prone to failure as your experiment has already shown. What kind of operating system related data is on there as that can be usually backed up and restored to the new installation. Let me know though. Thanks for posting.
