Unable to Map Drive in Windows 98 to Windows 2008 Server

Upon replacing a Windows 2003 file server with a Windows 2008 Server we are now unable to map drives on all the Windows 98 computers to file shares on the Windows 2008 server.  We have compared Group Policy differences between servers and file folder permissions and all appears identical.

Is there a mode on the 2008 server we need to enable to allow legacy computers (Windows 98) to establish connection to this new server or is this Microsoft's way of truely not supporting Windows 98 anymore?

We have to keep the 98 computers around due to some very old Machines that are driven by these computers.

Thanks,
-TJ

What errors do you get trying to map the drive?
Try on the server to add an administrator user which has the same name as the Windows 98 user
I believe it can also be a problem with SMB. The win 98 smb may not be compatible with win 2008 smb at all although you can also try to switch to smb1.0 on win 2008 (losing its advantages of course):

1. Run "regedit" on Windows Server 2008

2. Expand and locate the sub tree as follow.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

3. Add a new REG_DWORD key with the name of "Smb2" (without quotation mark)

Value name: Smb2
Value type: REG_DWORD
0 = disabled
1 = enabled

4. Set the value to 0 to disable SMB 2.0

5. Reboot the server.

ASKER

No errors, It just doesn't respond on some systems.

On others is prompts for password but not username.

We have setup user accounts on the server with the same name that the Windows computer uses when logging in, we have also logged into Windows 98 with Administrator credentials from the server with no luck.

One other thing to note is that we setup the 2008 server in 2008 Native mode and the old 2003 server was setup in 2000 native mode.  Could this be part of our problem?

I will try make that change to the SMB on the server in the morning.  I have give up and came home to get a clear head.

I am going back in at 9am tomorrow morning to get them back up and going for Monday.  I will report back if that solved the problem.

Thanks again for the quick response,

Just stumbled across this.  Might be worth trying this new DSClient if the SMB thing doesn't work.

Final result!!!

Could not get Windows 98 to work on this server as it was running in 2008 Native Mode.

This mode does not allow Windows 98 to connect to network shares.

Only solution would be to re-build AD in 2000 native mode like other server was running in.
Hi Lastmile.
I have the same issue as you.
Want to ask a few questions..
Did you manage to get the server 2008 to link to the windows 98?
when you say rebuild AD in 200 meaning when setup up AD you select the Windows 2000 for the forest level etc rite?
Help greatly appreciated
Thanks
