Migrate Windows 2003 domain to Windows 2008

We have a domain controller that is Windows 2000 server (standard).  A Windows 2003 server running terminal server as a member server.  We are getting a new Windows 2008 server that we want to be the domain controller and the terminal server.  Is it possible to make the new 2008 server a domain controller using a different host name, copy the data from the old 2003 server to the new 2008 server, then disconnect the old 2003 and change the name of the new 2008 to that of the old 2003 server.   AKA&old 2003 server name (server), new 2008 server name (server2)&after the transfer, change the new 2008 server name from (server2) to (server).

this is a great thread, Tigermatt.

I have the same situation myself, a new Server2008 to take over for an old Server2003.

However there is a caveat in my case.

I need to keep the old Server2003 online and running, and I am wondering if it's possible to have both servers running with the new server providing the various DNS, DHCP, Exchange services but have the old one on standby whereas if the new server goes offline the old one takes over.

How would that be possible, if at all?
Hi wibuus

You'd be best posting your own question, however, in short, you can keep the old server running if you wish.

Is changing tthe name of a DC a smooth change now?  I remember going to server 2003 training and the Microsoft Rep's saying that there is a button to change the name, but they highly recommended us to leave it alone..  So, I have never changed a name of a DC without demoting it first.  However, that would be a wonderful thing to be able to do.  I am getting ready to migrate 2 server 2003 servers to server2008 servers and remove the old one's completly.  It would be great to be able to change the name.
Excellent info! One question though, can the forest prep and domain prep be run on a machine attached to the child domain?
I've tried to run adprep32 /forestprep on a windows 2003 R2 Sp1 server but I don't really know if forestprep succeeded because it seems to run and run until I press return to get a new prompt.

Forest and domain level is 2000-native
This dc (2003) is the only dc in the forest.

Please help me! :)
Wish I could give you more points for this.  Excellent
