Windows Server 2008 Standard error

Hi
I am working on  Windows Server 2008 Standard edition. It is configured as DC and working fine until yesterday. Since yesterday, whenever I try to access any component under Administrative Tools, the following error message is displayed.
"windows cannot access specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them".
I am able to access the same from System32 folder and run application as Administrator.
I have tried different options, but none of them have worked.
Please advise.
Thanks
KP

Hi,

Have you changed any security policies or applied any default security policies. Have there been any windows updates installed.  Try disabling UAC by going to control panel and see.

revert backup with additional details and queries if any

Hi Bhanu,
I have not done any changes to security policies. Windows would have been updated. If the recent update is the problem, how do I uninstall it? I will also check disabling UAC. Because it is public holiday I could not check. Once again thanks for your response.
Give you feedback tomorrow.
KP
Hi,

My problem has not been resolved. I have uninstalled all recent updates. I have also tried disabling UAC, but still have the same problem.
Can anybody please help me?
Thanks
KP
Hi,

do you have any firewall installed on this server, can you check if it is any file restrictions have been applied.

Also confirm the version of IE is that 7, add the network drive to the trusted sites list, you can find it from tools\internet options, then select the security tab.

\\yourservername\

Hi,
I will check this out and get back to you. To give you more clarity on my problem, it was working fine till last week. Added few workstations to domain in last week. Symantec End Point Protection is installed and running in the server. After adding workstation to domain, SEP popup has come without any warning. Next day when I tried to access AD, the said error has come. Wondering whether this could be a virus problem. Updated SEP and run several times, but no virus or malware is found.
Thanks
KP
Hmmn seems to be an issue with SEP. Check the configuration of SEP and see if there is any kind of restriction applied for type of files accessed.

Check the SEP log if any exception is being added or event added to the log when you are accessing the files.

Try disabling SEP and try to access the files and see

bhanu
Hi
I have added servername in trusted sites but the problem remained same. I dont think this could be problem with SEP because SEP was installed long back, but I am facing this problem only from the last one week. However, I have disabled SEP too. This did not solve the problem.
Possible reasons for the problem could be OS or Virus (in my opinion). Do you think any other reason for the problem?
Thanks
KP
I am not really sure if we talk of Virus on a DC, and that too on Win2008. Can you do one thing

Go to Start>>run>> type MMC and try add the snapins i.e. Active directory & Users, Group policy or any other snapin.

If you are able to open MMC and add snappins then we need to look further.

Are you able to open MMC, Additionally confirm if there has been any change in the users properties i.e.

if he has been added to a new user group / OU

bhanu
Hi
I could add AD snapins by accessing MMC. There is no change in User properties.
Thanks
KP
are u trying to access the administrative tools from the start>>all programes>>administrative tools

or

start>>control panel>>administrative tools>>

bhanu
or try opening any of the .msc files that are part of admin tools

like gpedit.msc or rsop.msc in the start>>run dialog box do you get the same error or do they open without any issues

if you get errors then go check if the environment variables are set correctly normally all the components are *.MSC files and they are in the X:\windows\system32 folder.

also check the permissions for this user on the windows folder and \windows\system32 folder

bhanu
Hi
I am trying in all methods like from Start>Run> .msc, Start>Administrative Tools, and from C:\Windows\System32\*.msc. In the 3rd method if I run a particular msc (say dsa.msc) as Administrator, then it is getting opened, otherwise, the regular error message is coming. In the first two methods also only error message is coming. Environment variables are also appeared to be normal. I have no much knowledge in it, but I have not ever changes those values. All default settings are there. Gave full security permissions explicitly to Domain Administrator and Administrators for C:\Windows and System32 folders. Even now I am getting the same error.
Thanks for your interest in helping us to resolve the issue.

Hi,
Somehow, my problem appears to be pecular one. Your suggestion did not help me to resolve the problem. I ran into few more problems today. Event Viewer is not showing up.  Event Log service is not running. DNS Server has stopped running. When I am trying to restart the service, showing Error 1717 : Interface is not shown. Sometimes even I wonder whether Windows Server 2008 is consistently performing or not. We have managed Windows Server 2003 for 3 years and never ran into this kind of problems.
Thanks alot for your interest and continued support.
Thanks

can we request the asker to post back how the issue was resolved or what helped him resolve the issue
Hi,

We have reinstalled Windows Server 2008 using Upgrade option. This worked and the system came back to normal with the old settings and everything is working fine now.

Thanks and Regards
KP
hi Ramesh,

how were you able to upgrade a windows 2008 server to windows 2008 or did you upgrade it to enterprise version. please post back and close the question as your issue has been resolved.

thanks

bhanu
Hi Bhanu,

We repaired the OS. As Repair option is not available in Windows server 2008 we used the upgrade option. It repaired the OS by retaining the old settings. All the Active directory and other  settings are back to normal.

Thanks and Regards
Praveen
