Browse All TopicsI have several servers currently running Microsoft Windows server 2008 Standard RTM/SP1. With Server 2008 R2 coming out, is there a direct upgrade path from 2008 to 2008R2? or would I have to completely reinstall the OS?

Sorry, I guess I could have been more clear...
But if you follow the link and read the article, you'll see the part that is inaccurate is:
"R2 is an extension of the current 2008 platform or a minor release to a major release."
R2 is based on Windows 7 core, NOT Vista, which is what Server 2008 is based on, so it is in fact a major upgrade and t here are a lot of major differences.
But yes, of course you can upgrade, as long as you are on 64 bit hardware... but does anyone still run 32 bit server OS's? ;)

At this point there is not much information about R2 out there but the answer would be yes you can upgrade from R1 to R2 just like in 2003. R2 is an extension of the current 2008 platform or a minor release to a major release. Just some important info the R2 release won't be available for 32-bit 2008 server. The 2008 R2 release is only available for the 64-bit edition of 2008. Here is a little info on 2008 R2.
