Question

Migrate Exchange 2003 on Server 2003 to Exchange 2007 on Server 2008(x64)

Asked by: SteveSheeley

I've done a ton of research but cn't find the definitive "This is How You Do It!"

Current email system:  Exchange 2003 on Server 2003, approx 55 mailboxes and associated calendars/public folders/etc/etc/etc.

Replacement system:  Exchange 2007 running on Server 2008(x64)

End result?  Server 2008/Exchange 2007 replaces (100%) Server 2003/Exchange 2003.

What's the best practices procedure for doing this?

Hi,

This is pretty much the instructions that I followed when I had to do this for a client.
How to Transition from Single Forest to Single Forest: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997617.aspx
Then
How to Move a Mailbox Within a Single Forest: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997961.aspx
To move the mailboxes scroll to the part: "To use the Exchange Management Console to move a mailbox" Its way easyer than the cmd line.

Hope this helps

Cheers,
Perry

Almost forgot, disable or uninstall your antivirus when you do this. If you are using any Symantec product make sure that you exclude the exchange database from the the virus scan, or you will have a nice array of problems and in my case a 3hr phone call with Microsoft at 11:00pm...........

And please do not forget your public folder data. If your users are using outlook then they should get pointed to the new server after mailbox move.

watch you transaction log space when moving users.

do your users use owa ?  you will need to get the certs in place, etc.

do you have blackberry? do not forget time to research that if you have a bes server.

So what do I need to do then to move OWA access to the new server?  And yes, we do have a BES server in house, how will this be affected?

by: Perry_IDITCPosted on 2009-03-06 at 10:50:21ID: 23819778

For OWA you will need to move any SSL certificates your orgnization uses to the new server.

For BES there are two ways really, If you can afford a little down time get everything setup on the new server just dont start the BB services until everything is finished. Then turn the old server off and start the services. Downtime should be minimal.

Follow this set of 3 articles, starting with Part 1: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Transitioning-Exchange-2000-2003-Exchange-Server-2007-Part1.html.

They are the ones I personally use myself, and the ones I always recommend. The information you would find spread all across the Microsoft site is contained in three pages on the MS Exchange site. It will help you get the job done from start to finish.

As a point of note, many configurations have the Exchange 2003 Server on a Domain Controller, or they consider promoting the new Server 2008 machine to a DC as well as Exchange Server. Is this the case here? If so, you need to let us know, as this involves a bit of a twist into the procedure. If you don't do things right, Exchange can be severely broken.

No, the Exchange server will reside on it's on hardware, my DC is getting updated to 2008 as well, but again, is its own hardware.

In that case, you will have no issues following what is described in those articles. Good luck.
